suke
hey they look good in the pictures so the custoemr should be happy! did you try something like iron-x? I haven't.....I also don't have any. I don't think that would work in this application. This stuff pretty much resembles tar. It actually looks identical to tar......although I've never seen this much tar on the face of a wheel. Which leads me to believe it's not. Guess it could be. It's raised, you can feel it with your finger, but normally tar on wheels you can chip off with your thumbnail relatively easily. This just looks at you and says suck it. This actually has me stumped. Normally I have SOME kind of trick......this I have no idea how to address. lol When I clayed one of the wheels all it did was make my clay dirty. Didn't really seem to change the appearance of the tar like substance. I'd imagine it I went to hell on the wheels with clay for a couple hours it would come off. If it was my own wheels( well they wouldn't get this nasty) I'd go to town on it until it was all off. However, since I'm getting paid per hour( on a previously agreed upon price) and a set deadline I don't have the time to spend hours trying to make the wheels perfect. You've seen the rest of the car.....I think it will be ok.

suke
So after looking into some of the solutions and the chemical make up of some of them I decided to try some PB blaster I had around the garage. Got about 30% of it off. So figured I can spray it on in between polishing steps and break the stuff up. Don't think I'll get 100% off but should get 80% or so off....who knows. Then off to get some of one of the iron cutting type stuff.
suke
This is after two passes with SSR. Time to bust out the even bigger guns. I have some extra duty heavy cut compound meant to take out 800 grit sanding scratches. After everything: Heavy cut, SSR, SHR, FMP, followed up with a combo of FMP and Revive( was seeing these tiny specs and thought there were from buffing....appear to be acid rain etching deeper in the clear than I care to go) Prime example here of what happens when you don't clean bird crap off your car.....it EATS your paint! suke
No more swirls bit man this paint is pitted like crazy with acid rain and bird droppings on all the flat surfaces.
suke
FYI all the updates pics are with my phone. I'll take better ones when i'm completely done and have done the final wash, etc. I'm walking a fine line of trying not to put too many hours into this thing. Need to just focus at swirl removal and not go after every scratch and try and remove it. Saw some on the fender and hood I COULD get out if I busted out the heavy cut compound.....but where does it stop? Every one I see will add a 4 th round of buffing. Before you know it I 'll have 50 hours into this. So trying to keep my perfectionism to a minimum so I don't kill myself on this. It's a heavily abused DD, that much effort would go to waste. Anywho on to the updated pics from tonight.

DaveVY
Looks really good! Based on the steering wheel it looks like it is driven by a woman. I usually see that white build-up on woman driven cars. Don't know if it is from make up or lotions, but have seen that many times. The LIC works great on removing that! Of course the camera flash makes it more visible than it is in person. I tried cleaning it with LIC and it made no difference.

Going to try and get as much of the buffing done as possible tomorrow after work.
suke
Welp I'm all done. Gotta say even though this was in good shape to start it was one of the tougher ones. It's more difficult I think to take something good and make it perfect then it is to take something crap and make it good. lol Before During With a non metallic paint even the slightest of imperfections will be seen. So I got within 1" of the paint with my flashlight to spot any imperfections. The only place I missed some were on the hood. I didn't do the flashlight test on those, just my halogens. Which normally catch everything. Noticed once it was in direct sunlight there are a few defects. grrrr. My wife came in while I was doing this and she was said WTF are you doing? I said looking for imperfections....wanna see? She said sure. I said see this spot how it's perfectly reflective? She said welll yeah. What does it look like otherwise. I moved to a spot I had already buffed once, but hadn't done QA on and said see this? See how it's not perfectly reflective. She shook her head and said geez that's like perfection. I said wellllllll yeah that's why people come to me. 50/50 shot of buffing out the hood decal/protector. This takes special care not to burn the decal. Don't try this at home kids. All done with that. Hood buffing done Sucker for a super clean and detailed wheel well. All done up to sealant All done I'm not all that pleased with the way the hood turned out, but it's not terrible by any means.
suke
What I'm working on now. Before Where i'm at now. All the rust is gone. Quite a bit of work and elbow grease. Now I need to polish everything up. Hopefully much of the brown will come off. Either way the chrome bits will shine up perfectly. Gonna hit it up with some MP1 and 2. Should be shining as good as it's going to. Turning out a lot better than I thought it would.
suke
All done! Turned out really good. It's not perfect, but don't think it could get any better without replating it. Anyone curious the process.....washed everything with Adams car wash. Followed by steel wool rub down with PB Blaster to remove the rust and tar. Followed by an acid wash to remove the brown tarnish. Wrapped up with Adams MP1 and 2.
suke
Back in for it's annual detail. She's still in really good shape from last year. Some minor spots here or there, but overall really good shape. Only real imperfections I could find in the paint is these little acid rain etching. You can see them by the corners of the light. Another one All gone! These lights pick up every single imperfection.....and look at that flawless paint!! All done but sealant at this point Since I'm pretty OCD things like this bother me......yes that's swirl marks on the brake light. on to the finished pics with a better camera. Pulled it out into the sun this morning. Holy crap!!! Turned out great. Few more pics with my phone

suke
Yeah black looks sooooooo good when done right. For some reason my phone took better pics than my camera actually did. So the only pics with the tape and mess removed don't look nearly as good. Oh well I'll post what looks decent.
suke
Back in for a detail. Didn't get any before pics cause I wanted to get working on her last night. Took an early lunch this morning and got the rest of the polishing banged out and first round of sealant. Need to wait 24 hours to do the final wax.....then she's all done. Looks damn good! Engine all dressed!
