5 year paint sealant from dealership

srthemi

Question

has anyone had the sealant protection from the dealership?  In my case they say it lasts 5yr with some lite maintenance.  It's expencive but not sure if it's worth it.    What does anyone think of this stuff.

Opticoat 2.0 is a better coating I'm sure and costs probably 1/4 of the price.

Would you really want the dealership prepping your paint for the next 5 years?  Have you actually felt the paint jobs at the dealership?  Decontaminated to all hell and scratched up from shoddy car washings.

And you want to pay them for a 5 year coating to cover all that up?  Sounds like snake oil to me.

Plus, you could get $100 worth of car care products from Adams' ($20 clay bar, $10 waterless wash, $10 shampoo, $30 Liquid Paint Sealant, and $20 revive polish) and only have to do that regimen once every 6 months or so, and get the joy out of detailing it each time.

If you need polishing and or correction work add the orange/white twins for $55, but still, they don't call it a stealership for nothing and I wouldn't waste more money with them than I had to, that F&I guy is really good when you are sitting down to sign paperwork at selling additional things right?  Tire insurance?  Etc, they are trained to SELL YOU!

You're paying for nothing more than the warranty with any long term programs that the dealership offers.

The sealant they use isn't any better and probably not as good as the sealants Adams offers.  It's ALL about the warranty.

It's not a product that lasts 5 years: it's a warranty that you don't need that lasts 5 years.

Light maintenance? That makes me laugh. If you look at the contract, somewhere in there it's going to say that you need a reapplication and if it doesn't say anything about reapplying a product then.....RUN!

Waste of money.

Edit: ^^He beat me to it.

Some dealerships coat their cars as soon as they come off the truck. Then sell you a 5 year paint protection plan. That extra charge for the sealant was already on my truck before I purchased it . Good news it strips right off with done APC.

Buy a $20.00 can of Adams Liquid Sealant, a microfiber towel, and have at it. Nothing on your paint will last 5 years without maintance so your better off buying $300 worth of Adams products and having the best protected (and shinyest !!) car on the block.

I went in to the dealership to take a look at an SS (wasn't impressed) While I was there we go into a conversation about their paint protection. First off my salesman was awesome and gladly told me that their detail guys are terrible. I was nice enough to tell him how terrible their paint protection was. He knows I'll be taking delivery of the new ride dirty and untouched by the "detailers". Also with every bit of plastic that it came with.

They are "pushing paper" on you. Basically they know that their paint protection is only worth the paper the warranty is written on. You buy this for $300+ and they say if you have issues bring it back. 98% of people will never bring it back. That is where they are making their money.

Skip it. It is never worth it. There are far better products out there that you can put on yourself.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advise on this subject.  I'm glad I can take this off if I want.  As far as the swirls and not claying the car before the "Sealant",  I told the salesman that I wanted it  clayed and make sure there was no swirls in the paint.  He assured me the detail guy was the best.  Sure enough there detail guy did the best job I ever saw a dealership do, I did the baggy test on it and was smooth as you know what.  No swirls at all, beautiful job.  They also gave me a extra bottle of the sealant then told me if I needed any help at all they would advise me on to maintain it.  The car is a new MDX Acura and so far that dealership is the best iv'e dealt with.  Great people.

By the way I'm a total Adams fan,  and I'm getting ready to order more product today.  I have 2 other cars I keep in shape using Adams products.  I think his products are the beast.  I'm getting older and thought I would try this stuff from the dealership to save me a little work if there sealant works.  Secound thoughts makes me think I wasted money.  Oh well you live and learn.  Right????

It's a two step process...

1. Laugh in their face

2. Walk away

But seriously do you know why they say it's 5 years? Because thats how long it will take your car to rust if you never wax it or seal it and after 5 years most factory paint warranties expire. Walk away and take care of your car the way you want to take care of it. The dealership is NEVER your friend, they just took $20,000+ of your money... Thats why they act all chummy. I've stopped talking to people I was friends with because they became salesmen for dealerships, they are all crooks!

Waste of money and time. When I bought my New Ram 1500 last year the dealership tried so hard to try and sell me on this crap. I told them I don't need or want it. I finally flatout told them you touch that truck in any way shape or form of protection sealant wax or wash buff I will walk away from this deal. Manager got pissy and said fine its your truck and walked away I then asked to talk to the owner and he approached me and apologized. I told him I may be a "young" guy but don't think you guys can try me on some BS. I take pride in detailing my vehicles and I do not let anyone else touch them. Can you tell I hate dealerships? I sometimes have anger issues. If you don't want to get crazy with buffing and such I would at least recommend some revive polish clay bar and adams sealant you can do it yourself have great protection not to mention its a great stress reliever.

I remember the dealership offering me fabric protection, even though the truck came with leather seats.  They even offered rust protection, even though the vehicle has a warranty against rust.  Go figure.

Oh, it's a waste like the others already made clear.
