Problem with my PC?

Garsnow

Question

I think I am having trouble with my PC. I noticed when I apply pressure, the pad barely wants to spin. for example, when I had my black pad on and was applying machine super sealant on low speed, I wasnt getting any rotation. Also, while polishing, I am getting the same type of issue. It's to the point where I can barely apply any pressure otherwise the pad just wont spin at all.

Ive taken the backing plate off and had a quick look around, and it doesnt seem tlike there is anything that can be tightened to help with this problem. Any suggestions?

Which PC, which backing plate, and which size pad and what type of pad are you trying to rotate.

7424xp, adams backing plate, 7" adams foam pads

Make sure you have the fiber washer on the backing plate.

I've had one over the years act up thoug, sounds similar. Time to upgrade to a Cyclo.

Hmm, I dont know what fiber washer you speak of. Ill have to research what you mean

In addition to the above questions, what speed are you running the PC?

5 with polish. 1-2 for sealant/wax application

I had a similar problem with mine and sent it back to have fixed. They said one of the little white wires was coming loose off the motor from vibration.

Did you send it directly to pc? What was teh turn around time/price?

I live in NH where there is an authorized PC dealer. It tooks two weeks to get back and was under warranty so free to fix. I was in the middle of doing a paint correction when it happened so I had to buy a new one to finish the job so now I have two PCs, one dedicated to 4 inch pads one to 7 inch pads. Actually its very convienent having both.

Try speed 3 for the application of sealants/waxes. At speeds of 1 or 2 there should still be oscillation, not may not have enough power to rotate. Is it rotating at speed 5?

The fiber washer goes on the backing plate stud that screws into the machine. Looking at my machine, it doesn't appear there should be any interference of the backing plate or pad to the housing, or body of the machine without the washer. The washer is there more to space the backing plate outward of the machine a bit to allow the backing plate removal tool to gain access.

Check the brushes. Had a similar problem with a unit and the brushes were worn down. Unit was less than 1 year old. There is a 3 year warranty on the newer units which started about  a year + ago. The brushes are not an item that is normally covered under warranty. Had to argue with the Service Center and they contacted Porter Cable. Porter Cable replaced them. I think the brushes were defective to wear that quickly. My own PC is about 12 years old and never had a problem with the brushes.

If I remember correctly you don't need the washer with the Adam's backing plate.

Adam's Premium 6" Machine Polisher Backing Plate

Thats because the Adam's plate comes with a washer, you can see it in the pic.  Rotating those 7" pads on speed 2 is low and to keep the pad rotating you should barely be using any pressure at all, just enough to keep the machine down on the paint.

To the guy above that said there is no ill effects without the washer that is wrong, it will make the rivets on the backing plate rub on the counterweight/spindle interface, don't use the machine without a fiber spacer washer:

(I cant link an AG picture but there is a thread about it on AG forumS)
