1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

Charlie Reichler and I had the opportunity to work on a 1969 Chevy Chevelle 396, 4 speed, bench seat, SS clone yesterday. The car belongs to the owner of a little Hot Rod Shop called The Garage just a few miles from my house. The owner, Mike Keller, has helped me out with several of my own cars and I figured this was a great way to repay the favors.

This car had originally been his Mother's with a 307, 2 speed automatic, and a vinyl top, then his brother's, who drag raced it. The story goes the brother was getting married and needed money, so Mike bought the car from him. The car was rebuilt in the early 90's and was painted 18 to 20 couple years ago.

It no longer has the old 307

But still retains the bench seat

Mike said he has never washed the car traditionally, with a hose and bucket. He said he wipes in down with a "Quick Detailer" and a feather duster. Considering that, the paint didn't look bad. He does drive it, and keeps it covered when it's at home.

Here's a shot I took of it last fall when I was considering the correction:

Nice, huh?

There have been a few noticeable changes, different license plate,

(Any guesses on his favorite Movie? He also owns a 55 Chevy, that one's plate reads Wicked 55.)

and the pipes no longer exit at the bumper.

Yea, the tires are rather large!

18 1/2" wide if I recall!

Otherwise, about the same. Oh, and there's a quarry within five miles of his shop, quarry dust settles on it when it's parked here!

The car was first wiped down with Rinseless Wash mixed up as Waterless Wash at a concentration of roughly 1.5 oz product to 14 oz distilled water.

Next step was to clay the vehicle:

The car had quite a bit of embedded contaminants, and looked much better after just the claying.

We figured the correction was going to make this thing remarkable.

We used the trunk lid as our test panel:

Two passes of the Flex, or Cyclo using the Orange Microfiber pad and Paint Correcting Polish followed up with the White Foam pad and Paint Finishing Polish could get us to here. It took us quite a while and several texts back and forth with Nick (really did appreciate the help Man!) to get the process down to where we wanted it to be.

Some more testing with the different machines/products/pads on the hood:

This is for you Chris!

Our tools we ended up doing the correction with:

And she came out nice:

And topped with Americana

Did you figure out what his favorite Movie is? Here's a clue:

My fellow shine freaks, this is a perfect example of finding the right pad/polish/technique combo for your specific paint.  It's all about finding the right "formula" on your test panel, then taking that around the rest of the vehicle to get the results you're hunting for.

Great work fellas, always happy to give some "remote assistance!"  :)

Ran into this thread - now I cant get a damn thing done for the rest of the day.  And to think, my wife actually thinks I use this here computer thingy to waste my time looking at pictures of silly old naked girls.  Although I love ALL cars - and I am especially proud of the fact that U.S. car makers are producing new cars like the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger, I am just a die hard late 60s early 70 muscle car fanatic.  This car is so beautiful.  The paint looks like you could dip your finger into it.  GREAT job detailing this car.
