claybar questions

noquarter

Question

Quick question.

I did the following with my car about 6 weeks ago.

Washed of course

1. clay bared

2. paint sealant

3. americana wax

4. brilliant glaze as needed

Its getting time that I would like to apply the Americana wax again.  Usually I always clay bar before waxing but I was wondering if its different with a layered system?  Will clay barring it remove the paint sealant?    Should I just wash and apply the wax and only clay bar when its time to reapply the pain sealant?

Thanks,

I sure hope you don't have any bonded contaminants after 6 weeks.  Honestly, you probably could do a pass with clay though, if you did.  Sealant is pretty "hardy" and just a light pass with clay should still leave it on the surface.

I usually clay twice a year (spring and fall), and maintain my LSP in between.

I wouldn't worry about claying after it's been 6 weeks unless you live in an area that somehow gets stuff all over your car that requires a clay so soon.  I would just wash and apply the wax.

to answer your question, I do believe claying does remove paint sealant.

Some more details I guess.

Car is garaged.  2600 miles have been put on it in those 6 weeks.

Maybe once a week I drive it to work where it sits out.

Aside from that, the hardest conditions it sees is the drag strip where burn outs certainly throw a lot of rubber up on the rear quarter.  I use a spray called "Burn Guard" though that applies a layer of protection that allows the rubber to come right off.

Car is washed on average 2-3 times a week.

I'm a total rookie at this detailing stuff so take my advice for what it's worth.  My opinion is that this is the perfect opportunity to use the HG&G.  You should get another 2-3 months protection out of the Americana alone so the HG&G would be a nice way to revive the shine and add a little protection.

The other question I would have (being a rook) is whether it's even possible to remove the Americana without also taking some or all of the LPS too.

All that being said, if you just need some 'detail therapy' then I recommend you put on your favorite music, pop open a cool beverage and go to town with whatever product you want.  It's Friday, after all.

After the wash do the 'baggie' test, that will let you if it needs claying again.

Place your hand in thin plastic bag and feel the surface - smooth?  move to the next step - rough?  get busy with the clay!

makes sense.  But if I do clay I was just wondering if sealant needs to be applied again.
