what to do when Adams doesnt offer a product your looking for?

dnull

Question

So if you cant tell by reading the few posts Ive made I am starting up a small detailing business. I am in the process of collecting tools, chemicals, and supplies to make my go at this successful. My question today is what products does everyone offer for odor elimination and fabric protection? I also notice that some of my soon to be competition offers different levels of paint sealing, any suggestions here?

TID includes "special odor neutralizers kill unwanted smells."  As with every Adam's product I've tried, I found it effective, but I've never had problems with really bad/strong unwanted smells.

I've got primarily leather interiors, so LC is my go to for interior protection.  It works and smells great, but doesn't address your fabric need - sorry.

LPS is my go to for paint sealing.  I supplement with HGG, and generally add BG & Americana or Patriot before car shows.  Again, I don't think that really addresses your desire for "different levels of paint sealing" - sorry x2.

any suggestions on where to look for such products as a fabric sealant and odor eliminator?

I don't think anyone is going to link you to a competitors website.

However, If you try googling Detailing+"the products in which you're seeking", I think you'll find a few good places to start.

Really wish you guys would finish up on the coating development.  I think Dylan was working on it before he left.

I see a few potential derailers with an Adam's offered coating.

1) Market -  Adams is oriented to the total amateur, the casual weekend detailer, the DIY with professional intensity, and in instances professional detailers. Potential sales are really only going to come from the last two categories. See Item 4 of why you want that to be true...

2) Application - Application of coatings can be tricky. Some you have to be quick with, others have a tendency to high spot easily. Some of the more DIY coatings have reviews of too long of a cure time, in that, something happened while it was curing because it took too long to set up.  Some have to be cured with UV lights, and others take a good 24-48 hours to cure. That kind of starts cutting into that third bucket from item 1, especially if they are coating their DD. This coating would have to be easy to apply consistently across all ranges of environments that the first three buckets might not be able to provide. Coatings are tough and aren't going to be undone just by doing a strip wash. We haven't even addressed the amount of prep that goes into preparing paint for

3) Cost - Coatings are expensive to manufacture, and thus expensive to sell. Matt probably has a great idea of where the pain point is for customers. An Adam's coating would probably be above most individuals pain points.

4) Customer Support/Education - Because of item 2, and the prep that is usually required for a coating, you're going to have to educate your customers, and then provide a lot of 1 on 1 support.

Honestly though, if Adam's did come out with a coating, my wifes SUV would probably get it. I have some detailer install PPF on my DD that I dont feel like monkey'ing with, and I'm afraid not having a coating on the covered paint would be too noticeable.

All good points there, but if they didn't think it was feasible, they probably wouldn't be in development with it for so long.

Just because it was in development doesn't mean it still is, or will come to fruition.

There have been several suggestive comments made by product testers in the past about products that we've never seen. A tire coating comes to mind.

Here's what I've noticed about Adam's in the short few months I've been a customer, and picked up from talking to Matt last week at the Houston Auto Show. Adam wants these products to be easy to use, and provide good results sometimes IN SPITE of the customers skill level, or lack their of. Just about every product is so easy and enjoyable to use. I've never gotten frustrated with a product. Sometimes at my technique, or the results because of my technique or rushed through the process, but the products themselves, for me, have always just worked, despite my shortcomings.

I really believe that if a product gets to the point where Adam has to decide yes or no, and the product can't 'just work'.... It probably goes back to the drawing board, or we never see it.  I'd love to see the R&D cabinet, and whats hiding behind it's doors.

As for the coating, John hit on very good points. It's pretty much been on hold for several months as we fine-tune some of our other product that we will be launching or reformulating this year. Yes, a coating would be awesome for most of the hardcore detailers here on this forum (myself included), but from an overall big picture customer perspective and market, especially for beginner customers, we want the simplest, easiest, and most effective processes and products that "just work", exactly like John stated, and coatings don't really fit into those categories just yet.

We've toyed with the idea of a professional line of products, and coatings are something that would fit with it perfectly.

Wondering if I spied a new product on Joe's Instagram page.  The video show Adam wiping down a car with what appears to be detail spray on the left and a green colored product on the right and a (green colored?) hex applicator..  It could be glass cleaner or total interior, but it has the new pull cap on it and not spray nozzle.  Well see.  :xfingers:

But I do ask them to come up with things ( like product to keep the darn dust off my black Camaro for more than 10 min.) love how it looks clean but holly crap its dusted in no time.

...product to keep the darn dust off my black Camaro for more than 10 min....

Talking about dust collecting on the back of my car after a short drive...Adam made a post that I can't seem to find. He mentioned an Adams product that resists road dust to a certain extent. What was the product?

I recently tried a coating that can be topped with wax. I found it just as easy if not easier to use than Americana. A coating does not have to be difficult to use. I opted to go that way due to all my vehicles living outside 24/7.

Maybe in the interim invest in a small steam cleaner for odor elimination. This way you can use steam to kill bacteria which causes many odors and rejuvenate the fabric in seats and/or carpets. This will save you a ton in chemicals in the long run.

Regarding sealing the fabric, there may or may not be something in development as Dan said ;)

I was waiting for a coating done by Adams and decided to try another out there. Won't name it but it is very easy to apply and its not like other coatings that don't flex with the paint because of temperature changes. Applying it is as simple as using a foam applicator pad and 6 drops of product to prime the pad then 2-3 drops afterwards once you feel the pad start to lose its slickness on paint. Once done with vehicle you go back around and wipe excess off. Provides 1 years worth of protection.

I'm not sure I agree with those who were insinuating that all coatings are difficult to apply or that it should be in a professional line-up of products.  I too have been waiting for Adam's to come out with a coating, but it really seems far off based on previous comments.  Since Adam's doesn't offer a coating would it be against forum rules to name the brand you have been using?  Alternatively, can you please PM me?   :)
