Ceramic coating rainbow

Brewmaster

Question

Yesterday, I applied ceramic coating to my 17 camaro, and everything looked great- but today, it looks like there are some areas where it has a rainbow look today- like I didn't get it all off. I was pretty diligent and not leaving too long to dry, but the lighting in my garage made it really hard to see. Question is, will the boost reduce the effect, should I apply more coating? Will it improve with time, or do I need to polish it off and re-apply in these areas? If I need to polish it off what level of polish, etc would I need? I did my wheels two weeks ago in the daylight (I know, bad) but didn't have this problem once. Thanks!

Brilliant Glaze will usually do the trick if you catch it early enough, but it sounds like the coating had already cured too much if the rainbow effect returned.

You may be able to reapply a small amount of the Paint Coating to those areas as Brian stated, but you may end up having to machine polish those spots and start over in that area if that doesn't fix it. You could also try something like Revive Hand Polish or Correcting Polish by hand before going to the machine - they're both going to be more abrasive than Brilliant Glaze.

Having some good lighting will help out, but lights can get pricey depending on what you go with. I have plenty of downward lighting in my garage for the top surfaces of a vehicle, but I use a few LED spotlights on tripods for working on doors, fenders, and bumpers to make sure I get all of the coating residue wiped off. Sealants and waxes are mostly ok to miss a spot when buffing off the residue and then wiping it off the next morning when you notice it, but coatings are not as user friendly in this regard.

Thanks Dan, I was working at night with one bulb burnt out over the car- I replaced them with leds the next day, but not early enough. The sides is where I was in trouble. I am even seeing more areas now in the daylight, but they are small. How will I know it's removed in that area? I would think the polish would have some lubricant that may conceal the rainbow effect- just never worked with this stuff before. Thanks!

When polishing the coating off, you can tell if it's gone with the application of a small amount of water. If it beads up and rolls off, the coating is still present. Water reacts differently to the coating than it does to the bare metal which is what should be under the coating.

I have had this issue on a couple spots on my car. Found them long after it had cured, a little bit of Revive works good, or even better the Finishing Polish. I like that stuff since it has a little bit of SiO2 in it, it helps add soome more coating back to where you got rid of that high spot. Also as Dan said, hand first.
