Adams Metal polish #1 & #2

Ls1transam

Question

So my mom bought a 2012 Grand Cherokee. It's super nice but hasn't been taken care of properly. I have to clean the whole interior thoroughly when I get time I have already done the exterior, except these nasty terrible tips. I cleaned as much as I could but made no difference. Then tried the metal polish. It was working but really slow. I'm working by hand and not with a machine. So I used 2000 then 3000 grit sand paper to remove what looks like 5 years of build up. After I followed with Adam's metal polish in their intended order. They really brightened up the tips after the wet sanding, even polishing by hand. If I had one of those buffer ball extension for a drill they'd look even better. But, still it's a nice turn around I think. Here is a before and after.

Those look great, John!

I haven't made the jump to the Metal Polishes yet, so I have a question about the abrasive product you used because I've always heard to use 0000 steel wool, nothing else unless I wanted to induce lots of scratches. What's the difference between using 2000 or 3000 grit sandpaper instead?

I wanted steel wool but didn't have any. These tips were so bad even with scratching I knew they'd be better than what they were before I started. I'm assuming these tips have never been cleaned since this thing rolled off the lot. All I had was sand paper so I thought I'd give it a go. The 3k was working but slowly. So I went to the 2K grit and it removed all the gunk pretty easily. After that using the 3k grit brought back a lot of Shine where the 2k grit made the tips dull looking. Following up with the metal polishes really made the tips Shine. There are some fine scratches left. My hands just can't work fast enough to remove them. Even still these tips look great up close and from a distance. I'll get one those drill attachments and further buff them out. Or I may leave them like they are. They look 100% better in my opinion now.
