Coating On White

galaxy

Question

You guys have any tips or techniques for what you do as far as looking for the rainbow "flash" on a white car?  I've only coated one car and the biggest learning curve was getting a technique down on how to use the surrounding light to my advantage to see the rainbow flash over on a gray car.  Getting ready to detail a Lexus pearl white IS and have the feeling that part's gonna be a challenge.  What works for you guys?

On my gray car (Ford Magnetic), I found the best method to see rainbowing was to use the ambient light coming in the garage door and viewing the surface at a slight angle, as if looking across the surface vice directly at it.  White seems like it's gonna be difficult no matter what, LOL.

I wasn't even waiting 1-2 minutes. Where I could see it flash, it took no more than 30 seconds. I've found that if there is a lot of drag on the towel when wiping off the coating I was waiting too long, or my towel was contaminated and needed replaced. I went through three Single Soft Microfiber Towels.

I've done several cars now and two were white, I did one in an air conditioned shop and one in a non air conditioned garage. The one in the a/c took over a minute to flash, in the humidity of the other garage, no more than 30 seconds. Both times a good LED light made all the difference in watching it flash. Just my .02.

I have awesome LEDs in the garage and one of those stand type shop lights with two awesome LEDs on it and didn't like using it for the grey. I'll try it with the white though. As you guys will agree, colors can make all the difference.

I coated a Pearl White Nissan Juke earlier this month. I too have a lot of overhead LED lights and some on stands. I could see the product rainbow easily on the hood and roof. For the side panels I had to move the lights around to see it rainbow.

On white I find it best to use natural light so I'll open the garage doors and look at it from different angles. Start with a small are to get a sense of the flash time and try different light sources before doing the whole car. In natural light looking into the light any leftover residue will look like a dull spot
