Satin black painted wheels

jvs0302

Question

Hey guys,

I have a brand new set of replica Hellcat wheels going on my Jeep SRT8.  They are painted satin black.  Do you suggest any type of wheel coating for protection?  I was thinking of the ceramic coating but am unsure if it is ok for painted wheels and will it ruin the satin black finish?

Thanks for any input!

While it won't cause damage, the product website (http://adamspolishes.com/shop/exterior/coatings/adam-s-ceramic-wheel-coating.html) does warn, "This coating may add undesirable amounts of gloss to matte and satin finish wheels."

Or, you might instead consider PS (or HGG, but that's shiny, too) since it will wear off faster, just in case you don't like the look.

Thanks for the input guys.  This thing is not a daily driver and only sees a few thousand miles on the road each year and in nice weather only.  Thinking of just keeping them clean with the matte detailer and not risk adding gloss with the ceramic.  I am changing over from gloss black wheels because I hated the shiny look so I definitely do not want to add any gloss back!

Sounds like you got an answer already, but we've got a '16 Jeep GC SRT Night and the satin black wheels.  I added the ceramic wheel coating to them since the brake dust from the Brembos is so bad.  I noticed very little in the way of extra shine but the time I spend cleaning the wheels was drastically reduced.

I would definitely coat them again.

Oh man this peaked my interest again lol.  I may purchase on the next sale and do a section inside one of the wheels to see how it comes out.  They are off the truck now so it would be easy enough to do.

Thanks all for the opinions!

Check out mine and Jason's wheels in this thread. Very minimal, if any, added gloss from the coating. I was hard pressed to tell any difference (in appearance). I would not let the threat of gloss influence your decision....its way overstated IMO.

Thanks for the link!  Looks like it worked out ok for both of your sets of satin wheels.  Question - did you also apply ceramic boost and did that change shine level?

I have an SRT GC with satin black wheels and I applied Adams wheel coating. If it adds shine at all, I didn't really notice. What I did notice is an incredibly easier process to remove brake dust caused by those Brembos. Look back through my posts and you'll see my process for cleaning them as well as some feedback from the Adam's team.

Good to know it will not add gloss to satin finishes. Just picked up a 2018 1LE with satin black wheels and I want to coat them since the brake dust is insane

Well, not so fast. The Adam's product page says it "may" add shine to satin finishes. Just because it doesn't for one person doesn't mean the next won't experience it and/or notice it more. Just be forewarned you may have a different result.

Good point. Maybe I will experiment on the barrels first since I will not mind if they have a little shine to them.
