Sticky steering wheel. Need an assist

8675309'SS

Question

Hi All, I am sprucing up my aunt's 2003 Honda Odyssey. Did the interior today. The center piece of the blasted steering wheel is ridicoulsly sticky. And while every other piece of interior needed a good deep clean, there was only one other spot that was similarly sticky. It was the vinyl over the air bag on the dash. But it wasn't quite as bad.

So I went to town with Leather and Interior Cleaner and a lot of crap came off on the microfiber, but still sticky. I read a past post to try APC diluted. What do you all have for me? Is this some sort of vinyl weirdness? Does it have to do with the chemicals from the airbag? Has anyone else come across this? She lives in FL, she said she noticed it a few years ago. Do I just need to try harder?

Also any tips on how to scrub without honking the horn? LoL my neighbors might kill me...

Here is a pic. You can see fuzz and God knows what else stuck to it.

If you have steam that would be the way to go for sure, I think though a few of those interior plastics get like that and interior detailer wouldn’t be a bad idea! Oh, and the APC is what I would try if interior detailer doesn’t work.

Hey Jen, I don't think you'll have any luck cleaning these dash plastics, I detailed one of these a few weeks ago and it was the plastic deterioration that was causing this problem. I have also seen it on a new ford this past weekend. If you find something that cleans it you can teach me how to do it.

Here's what I would do.  Put rubbing alcohol on a cloth or better yet, use a swab (like they use when you get a shot) and wipe it all down.  It should take all of the sticky off. Then treat the entire area with Leather Conditioner to keep it from drying out.

Update: Inconclusive...

The work I did on the steering wheel last time appears to have had *some* effect. It was much less sticky when I got to her vehicle tonight. I could actually run my hand across it with out it sticking or stopping. I proceeded to try the alcohol and microfiber towel and scrubbed. It was instantly tacky from the moisture. Carried on with the plan and added more Leather Conditioner. When I left it it was still tacky to the touch. I'll get a report from her in the morning and again when she gets back to Fl.
