Correcting the finish on factory wheels

NowDatsG

Question

Hey everyone, need a little bit of guidance. These wheels I have on my vw seem to be sanded by the previous owner. When I bought the wheels they were painted. So what you see is what he was hiding underneath.

What products or guidance can you guys advise to get them to look much better.

Things I already have are a porter cable buffer (small and large pad adapter) paint correction and finishing polish, and revive hand polish. I also have paint sealant, and buttery wax but I doubt the wax would do anything.

I wouldn't hesitate to try some heavy correcting polish on them and see what happens. The faces can't get much more damaged then they already are. Treat it like paint and go to town. Maybe try working an area inside the barrels and see what happens as a test spot. Once you get them as you like them, seal them up and enjoy.

Microfiber will give you a more aggressive cut. And I'm guessing you'll need every bit of cutting power you can get. From the pics, I'd go heavy correcting compound and the blue/white microfiber pads. You can follow with heavy compound and a blue foam pad, then orange and correcting polish and white and finishing polish. Depends really on how wild you want to get and how much time you want to put into it.

So I finally grabbed some of the heavy compound and some pads. Here is a pic of one spoke after 2 passes with the foam pad. I did a total of 4 passes but it didn't get any better with the deep scratches but I can almost see myself lol.

Also my pads became super dirty after one pass, I'm talking total eclipse, pure black. Most likely years of Sh*/ in the wheels. When I get a chance I'll go to correcting polish and snap more pics

Chances are the Clear Coat that had been on the wheels from the factory was all but removed when the original owner scuffed them to paint them. The black your getting on the pads while polishing is from the raw, exposed aluminum.

To get through those deeper scratches you'll need to start with a heavier cut aluminum polish, then finish with Adam's Metal Polishes #'s 1 & 2.

You're most likely correct about the barrels being painted from the factory. A lot of OEM wheels have anything from a flat black to a gun metal color sprayed in this area to help with appearance as they get dirty.
