We put three on this particular coating since it’s pretty unforgiving to work with in regard to high spots. They potentially require wet sanding to eliminate. With two to three of us on a coating, we can knock one out in 10-15 hours depending on the condition when it comes in. And this one has three layers of ceramic on it. I believe the total was 14 hours and it was a bit slower than normal since we couldn’t put it in the very well lit coating bay. We have over 100,000 lumens of light in that bay so it’s easy to catch high spots and we aren’t moving portable lights around. The other benefit we have is access to multiple polishers, pads and and polishes and compounds to use. Our operation has a number of distinct advantages over what most hobbyists have available for tools and equipment. For wheels off (which this was) we have a lift. Things of that nature have a huge impact on our finished product. Nickfire20

shane@detailedreflections
I haven’t posted up my many pics of our work lately since we’ve been cranking out some routine work and I’ve been super busy with the family for the holidays. I’m getting back at it though and will have some photos after this weekend. We are installing a five year coating on a Honda CR-V today. This week we are finishing up that Corvette Grand Sport and picking up his Jeep to do! And in other exciting news, here’s the latest bit of photo gear to enhance our images. A Benro Carbon Gimbal head. The camera has my Sigma 150-600 on it now, but the gimbal head will provide easy movement and nice stability for images! The next imaging tool for us I think is going to be a drone for video purposes. Hopefully soon... shane@detailedreflections
A friend of ours got a new car with his wife, and wanted us to do what we do to it. They settled on a five year coating. We installed the coating, interior protection and a glass treatment. This was a wheels off job, so even the barrels got coated. No interior shots since it was new, so nothing exciting to show there. And we had a C7 Corvette Grand Sport come in for paint protection film on the front end and a nine year ceramic coating. We also installed a glass coating on the windshield and full interior protection. Currently in the shop we are installing a nine year coating on a brand new Jeep JL. Here’s some teasers of that. It’ll be finished up tomorrow and delivered on Monday when the final two layers of ceramic are cured up. RayS
@shane@detailedreflections and team Thank you for sharing your work. Every time I look at what your team is able to accomplish it just pushes me a bit more to continue to learn and up my game. As an FYI, my wife appreciates it also, since her car gets the primary treatment. Although, she has been rather clear that when we get her new Blazer we'll be scheduling a northern vacation trip because she wants it to be the best it can be... @ObsessedDetailer While the Mustang is beautiful, it is just too bad that it isn't the right color. I love my Mustangs and the job you did on that one would be beyond gorgeous if it was Red. ObsessedDetailer
shane@detailedreflections
@ObsessedDetailer thank you. The mustang came out gorgeous and the photos are awesome. I wish we had a backdrop like that for some of the cars we work on. I don’t usually drive client cars more than I need to, so taking them for a shoot isn’t common practice. It’s just set up outside the garage. I’ll shoot my car one day this spring though. All the precious shots were shot with a 35mm prime lens. I forgot to do the metadata to list the camera settings. I know ISO was between 100-400 and the aperture and shutter speed dialed in with a light meter. @RayS you’re welcome for posting the work. I enjoy the critiques on it. We can always improve our game. If you come this way for the clinic, we may be able to do two birds with one stone? Although if you want the absolute best work, I’d suggest not putting the blazer in the contest for a coating. It’s not a reflection of the candidates, but in the interest of time we won’t be doing the wheel barrels and not as much polishing. Unless those are compromises you’re willing to live with? If you want the very best package we have, we can put it together for you! Just shoot me a message and we can chat. You’re welcome to hang out and see how we work too if you’d like? The cars I just posted were done with just Marquis and I. It’s still mind blowing to me that people will consider traveling for our clinic and to have us do work from some far away planes. Marquis and I were just talking about that the other day while we worked on the Jeep. We are just two guys in a small garage on my property who enjoy cars. We make our share of mistakes. But we strive to fix them. We are constantly learning just like everyone else. I enjoy being a part of a community that helps each other! So thank you for the support! It means everything to us. And even though Marquis isn’t on the forum, I do share discussions with him regularly. So he is aware too! Thanks again. I noticed something in the Jeep pictures that I have noticed on other cars. In the first picture above, I see what looks like textured paint on the pillar behind the door. I can also kind of see it on the fender in the second picture. Is this just the nature of some paint that manufactures use? Since the Jeep is brand new, it can't be a defect. It seems like could take away from a mirror like finish that other cars can end up with. It still looks amazing. I just think it's weird that some cars have "textured" paint while others have glass smooth paint.

Second, don’t think just because it’s a new vehicle it has perfect paint. You may be seeing a slight amount of orange peel in the paint (look hard enough and you’ll find it on most paint jobs). Most people don’t want to pay for a paint job without orange peel since it’s difficult to do and takes time. That small amount you see in this photo will disappear once we roll this vehicle out into the sunlight. Good eye to catch that in the paint! And yes, some paint from different manufacturers is better than others. Edited January 6, 2019 by shane@detailedreflections

I have just noticed it with a few vehicles that I have worked with. I have heard the term "orange peel" but I didn't really know what it meant. That describes what I was talking about perfectly! I meant perfect as in smooth. I know it gets contamination and scratches and such from travel and the dealership. Thanks for the info and explanations. Again, great work! Adam Tarbox
Shane, Perhaps it is the angle, but on the Honda CRV, the door shot looks as if it has a lot of orange peel. What is going on with that?

If it were we would have found the door had been repainted with our paint thickness gauge and sent him back to the dealer since it was brand new. Looking now, the photo makes it look bad!
