Dave H
Greetings from N Ky / Cincinnati area !!!!! How do I know if a paint correction / iron removal is necessary, or if a clay bar is sufficient for the job at hand ? I do feel contaminants in the paint. Thanks for any help !!! Edited April 16, 2019 by Dave H A quick thank you !!!
falcaineer
Welcome, Dave! If there are swirls or scratches, paint correction is recommended. Adam's has a full line of polishes, polishers, etc to help. To what level of correction is in the eye of the beholder. You can chase perfection, but it's next to impossible and will drive you insane trying all at once. Iron deposits will look like small orange/rust colored specs on the paint. Especially noticable on white or light colors. Darker colored cars won't be as noticeable, if seen at all. Even new cars have it from rail dust, so if it's never been done, won't hurt to do. You might be surprised how purple your car turns when you didn't think much was there! Clay will remove bonded contamination, but isn't as effective against the iron deposits. Did you do the baggie test?
mc2hill
Welcome Dave! Good info from Chris^^. For the 'baggie test' you feel a horizontal clean section of the paint (usually the hood) with your hand. Now put you hand in a plastic bag and feel the same section, and if feels gritty it should be clayed.
