Here's a closer picture of how deep it goes at some points. The 2nd image, I have my Phone's LED light to the side to highlight the scratches that continue from the chips and onto the hood.
A while back, I do recall an unusual substance, several spots splattered across that area in a similar pattern, slightly translucent brownish color to it. When ever I see something on the car, I quickly detail spray it in case it's bird crap or something. Don't know if the splatter was related, but can't believe I'd miss it during the last wash. It can be hard to see in dim light.
The other day, while sitting in my car, a guy exited the car to my left, as he walks out from between our cars he puts his hand on my door, then fender, for support all the way out. I'm clearly visible. He looked handicapped from his movement, so I didn't freak, but my jaw was dropped. He didn't need any support after getting further, but why not use his car, especially with me in plain site.
Yes, some people might not know or understand the hidden damage. But even if I didn't know how much work some people put into their paint, or how just about anything could scratch it, I would still be respectful and not touch someone's car. Though, long ago I did learn how easily paint could be damaged. You know the old prank of drawing "Wash Me" on a car window, that can turn ugly I witnessed. A friend of mine had a dark emerald green car that was very dirty at one point. His co-workers, instead of using the window, they used their fingers to draw playful messages across the hood and side door I think. Even after washing, you could still read their messages in the paint's clear coat.
