New Toy!

I am a firm believer in the most toys wins! :lolsmack:

I go through a tonne of books in the run of a year. Decided to see if there was a cheaper way to get my fix. I am bad for buying new releases in hard cover, since I don't like waiting on my favourite authors.

Even better, books from before 1923 are out of copyright and therefore anything from free to a buck. Amazon has about 150,000 books Kindle ready in that catagory alone. I already have some Dickens, Twain and Shakespeare downloaded for nada cost.

A charge is supposed to last about a month since when a screen is generated no more power is required to display it. It also comes with wi-fi and a free 3G hook up for downloading.

Bought the case for it as well, since it probably see some sea time, might as well protect it!

The power is off in this pic with the picture of Jules Verne (the off screen is random).

This cover comes with a light, powered by the Kindle itself. Will eat some extra power, but is dang handy so far!

I just got the 3G version a couple of weeks ago. I really like it so far. The fact that I could download books before I even got the Kindle was cool. It arrived with 5 books already installed so I could start reading right away. You can download books from sites other than Amazon too. Just make sure they are in the right format. I like the fact that I can surf the web with it too. It is a little limited since it's black and white and navigating pages isn't that easy but it does work.

Jim,

How do you like that case and light. I'm thinking I might need to get one of those.

Steve, the light is a slick little piece of engineering. Here are a couple pics so that you can see it a bit better than it is displayed on Amazon.

The cover is pretty good quality and is about the same weight as the Kindle itself. The light covers the screen completely and doesn't wash it out.

The Kindle with the white/black ball screen is REALLY neat. I however would want something a little more versatile. Hence the advent of the tablet.

Reading on the Kindle IS kinder to the eyes but so far Apple has done a great job of making its books easy to read. If all you want is to read... The Kindle is the BOMB!

That's another reason I went with the Kindle. Between desk tops, lap tops and a smart phone, I have enough toys to do everything else.

That and the fact I don't need my reading glasses for the Kindle on font size four. LOL!

Jim,

My daughter's Bday is today and guess what she wanted. A Kindle. She is always reading so this was a great gift for me to buy her.

For some reason she couldnt connect to our network but then again she hasn't read any directions as of yet. :lolsmack:

I think I will get her the case for Xmas. :2thumbs:

The hardest part I had in connecting to my wi-fi network was putting in the access code for the encryption I use. The Kindle found all the wireless networks around me easy enough, but putting in that 26 digit access code was a PAIN!! LOL

The introduction that starts when you first turn it on is searchable so just type wi-fi in and it will step you right through it. Also, tap the menu button and make sure that wi-fi is turned on. That caught me as the first issue......LOL

The directions are pretty straight forward. Hit the menu button, select settings and then select wi-fi. It will automatically search for wireless networks around it. Select the network you want and click OK. If the network has security encryption enabled then you need the code generated by the wi-fi router when it was set up originally. Depending on the type of encryption, it can be as little as 11 or 12 digits or like mine 26 or more.
