Free E60 RDSport trunk spoiler

I posted a couple of days ago that I got a new spoiler on my car. Driving home today my spoiler, just had it installed Tuesday, decided it didn't want to be part of my car anymore and blew off. So if you are somewhere between Alpharetta and Morrow and find the spoiler it's yours FREE. If it happens to do damage to your car I hold no responsibility since it divorced itself from me.

Where's a smiley that says you're pissed or mad?:loser::mad:

These kinds of spoilers these days don't ever really get bolted anymore. Typically, 3M double sided automotive tape is enough. There is a system of preparing the surface and if it is not none then things like this happen. I have had mine 3Med for 2 years without issue. I also drive an E60.

Sorry guys I haven't be in here for a couple of days. It's looks like most of the questions were already answered anyway. As mentioned these spoilers are not bolted on just 3M double sided tape or glue. Since mine was only tape there was no damage at all. The spoiler even took all the tape with it.

Now for some good news, the body shop that painted and installed it are owning up and replacing the spoiler, painted, at no charge. However he said the only way he would guarantee installation would be if he bolted it on. I don't want holes drilled in my trunk lid so I will be installing it myself.

BMW actually sells a glue kit for adding plastic body parts on so I'm going to see if a local dealer had this kit. If not I'm sure I can find something at Autozone or some parts store. I am going to use 3M tape for the long middle of the spoiler and glue the ends. I'll clamp that baby down for a day to be sure that the glue is dry.

I think that lack of preparation and the way he taped the spoiler down led to it's blowing off. I had polished and machine waxed the trunk about 2 weeks before. All I had to clean the area off was some household cleaner so I doubt that removed much of the wax. So I'm guessing the tape simply didn't stick to the wax very well.

At this point I am a happy camper knowing that I will be getting a new, painted spoiler and I won't really be out anything. I'll post again when I get the new one installed.

50/50 iso and water and then apply... That should help!

It looks like there's a lot of overhang which I'm sure helped remove it from the car. If it's not on there just right I'm sure the downforce is pretty high and pushes it down off the car.

2 things...

1. 3M makes an adhesion promoter that works well with their adhesives.

2. It can take up to 72 hours for the tape to fully bond to the paint. If you can, I'd let the car sit for a few days after installing the spoiler. This should add in preventing any further 'air removals'.

By the way, the car looked great with the spoiler on it.

Thanks for all the info. After doing some more searching I have found that BMW actually sells a glue used to attach body trim panels and spoilers. I checked the local dealers and found that one has it in stock and it's only $15. It's a kit that includes a cleaner to remove excess glue, a tool to apply the glue evenly and even a little piece of sandpaper to rough up the surface before applying the glue.

I looked into that adhesion promoter and only found one place that sells it on line. It comes in a little packet and sells for $2.65 each but they want $6.05 to ship it. ????

I am going to look for that more before I mount the spoiler. I think that using the BMW glue and the tape I should be OK. When I install the spoiler I am going to clamp and use painters tape to hold it in place until at least the glue dries. That will also give the tape time to stick better too.

Use the Google Shopping search and use the term '3M 4298'. You'll get some results at the bottom of the page that will put you at about $2.50 shipped to your door for the adhesive promoter packet.

Thanks Jim. I had searched but I guess that model number helped narrow it down. I found it for $2.69 and 40 cents shipping. I'll shop for tape locally. Maybe I can ever get the guy at the body shop to throw some in.

Now all I need is for the spoiler to get here and be painted.
