A Detailing Question

My son’s father-in-law passed away suddenly last Tuesday. He (father-in-law) had a 1968 big block Camaro that was a frame off resto about two years ago. My son and his wife want to honor him by driving the Camaro to the funeral, but it needs a good cleaning.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

My question is I have really only done cars with a base coat clear coat. Is there anything I need to do differently with enamel or lacquer paint as compared to clear coat paint?<o:p></o:p>

I'm sorry to hear of the loss. One thing to make sure is to reduce your heat...paint will pull, even on a Porter Cable typically. The finish is softer than today's clearcoats, so use a gentle approach.

Thanks, that is what I thought,but just was not 100% sure. I have not seen the car in sometime, but since the frame off restoration, the car has not been driven much. He did a few shows that I also atended and drove it on a few special occations. It was garage kept and covered. So until I get a chance to look it it over, I am really thinking that all I need to do is a good bath and the then polish and wax. I may do it by hand depending on how it really looks. Wondering about claying it. Not sure if it was ever done after it was repainted.

 

I'll post some pictures before and after. My son wants to do it this Saturday or on Monday.

Are you positive it wasn't cleared? A lot of the non concourse restores are going with the newer base/clears.

Sorry to hear the circumstances, but what a good way to pay respects.

 

I agree with Chris, majority of restored vehicles I've been exposed to end up being cleared. Hope it comes out well for you.

He'll know if he polishes it by if the pad picks up the paint color or not.
