70'sChevyGirl
That is such sad news. I hope they are wrong and there are survivors. There have been way to many tragedys like this lately. Why? With all the technology can't they figure out a way to send robots into the mines?

Boosted
It's the second tragedy to hit the South Island in 2 months. There was a 7.1 magnitude earth quake near Christchurch, luckily no fatalities. This wasn't the big one they were expecting. I wonder what is next. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10671071 http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/ http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=3603824
Nordgrey
Been almost exactly 20 years since I last worked under ground. These still always hit like a tonne of bricks. So very similar to the Westray mine explosion in 1992 here in Nova Scotia. I had just left the mining industry about a year before. Twenty-one of the Twenty-six were friends. RIP boys. Teresa, many mining companies are making huge strides forward in "Tele-mining" where the operators of various pieces of equipment (scoops, Load/haul/Dumps, multi-boom drills) stays on the surface 95% of the time, but the brass tacks are, that so long as we need coal, lead, zinc, tin, gold, silver, diamonds and on and on, miners are going to have to go underground for at least some functions.
