Wife Wants Me to Start Detailing for $$$

icantdrive55

Question

This could be a dream come true. Yesterday my wife told my buddy (in front of me) that she thinks I should start a detailing business on the side for extra money. She thinks I'm really good at it - me being anal retentive is probably a big part of that. LOL Now the ball is in my court. I work full time and coach my son's baseball team. Good weather is pretty short in western NYS and I don't have a way to wash inside. I would love to detail for other people, but I could really find myself in over my head. What do you think?

Thanks,

Mike

Start out slow like many of us..go with family, neighbors, friends then spread the word from there if you find you're liking it. If you make it and official business remember to get insurance and a DBA.

Great advice Paul - thanks. Being from Rochester too, you really understand how limited good weather can be when it comes to detailing outside.

What about possibly using their garage for an inside location. Sure assuming they have one and there is room. Just a thought.

I have a 2 car attached garage that is finished, but not heated. It's a great space for detailing as long as it hasn't turned wicked cold outside.

:iagree: this is what Im doing myself, I just started with some family and coworkers, and so far it's good money on the side without interrupting my main job. If it gets serious I might start a car wash and a detailing business attached to it...you never know :)

Ahh, good ole WNY. I'm grew up in Buffalo area (East Aurora) so I know how bad the weather sucks. You have like 5 months to actually enjoy detailing, the rest is crappy weather.:2thumbs:

As far as detailing goes. My wife says the same thing, and I too coach my sons sports teams, so I feel ya. With splitting the time with family, I realized that in the grand scheme of things, a clean car is just that, a clean car. I will grab a friend, nieghbors or co-workers car here and there, but that's about all I'm willing to take away from the family, because you only get that chance once.

I would take it slow like the others said. Do your best work on yours and their vehicles, because once you start, you better never have a dirty car again. Because people WILL say things to you and call you out.

Also, the best thing you can do is either go to Squareup dot com and get the free Square credit card reader for iOS and Android devices or "buy" one at your local Apple Store. If you buy it ($9.95) at an Apple store, it comes with a $10 credit to pay you back for buying it. Your mobile phone and/or tablet is now your cash register, receipt "printer" and credit card machine. So simple. And deposits the money straight into your bank account.
