Time for new clay when.....

Question

Just an answer to a question not yet asked.

As we know, clay is constantly getting filled with the contaminants it pulls off the surface, hence the folding and re-folding to get a fresh clay surface. Eventually, the clay just can't take any more and will need to be replaced.

Replace your clay:

1) If it gets so contaminated that it looks "marbled" even after folding.

2) You drop it.

3) If it starts to break down. - This happened to me yesterday. It got really soft and mushy.

That's the main reason I break mine up into smaller pieces and use it for small sections so if I drop it on the ground it's not a big deal. Hopefully my claybar will last awhile before these other symptoms start showing up.

Correct! That's why Adam's Clay Bar is such a great value. With 200grams you can break it into several pieces and use only what you need.

Pretty sure this is how its done but just a random clay question to add on. When you are done using the piece of clay you just used it's done for. I have thought about using the used stuff on my wheels to get the larger pieces off and then go back with a small but new piece of clay. Keeps the new clay for only the final clean up and using the older clay for the major pickup. Thoughts?

I have used old dirtier clay for the inside of the wheels. However, the mush clay that I experienced was good for nothing. It was even gross to touch. With painted wheels, I would use a newer piece of clay, but NOT the same piece that was ever being used on the paint of the car.

Even if my wheels are painted/cleared?

Yea, but thats just me. Brake dust is just nasty and wheels are usually pretty dirty no matter how hard you try and I'd rather not over contaminate a piece of clay that would otherwise last much longer.

So I guess I'm saying I've got 3 different pieces of clay going:

1) good fresh clay for paint

2) ok clay for outer painted surface of wheels (never again to be used on the car)

3) almost retired clay for inside of wheels.

Precisely what my thoughts are too  I would NEVER take a used piece of clay to the pain on my car and depending on how bad it is, I may not even use it on the outside of my wheels. I just thought it would be a good way to reuse some clay and not get a new piece everytime. Even though I just got the 2 clay bar daily special :D
