Chewy Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 So I installed Lion (Mac OSX 10.7) on my MBP last night at home and then today on my work MBP. WOW! LOVE IT!! It does everything I liked about my old one, even better. You can DEFINITELY feel the iOS influence with this build. Download it off the Mac App store. $29.99 No disk needed! Note: They made the scrolling like an iOS device. Scroll up and the page goes down and vice versa. Weird to get used to, but you can change it back to old style in Preferences. This build of Google Chrome does NOT like Lion yet... Not all functions work. Chris
Team Adam's Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Its on my to-do list for later today... been waiting for lion. Snowleopard is great, but apple always manages to impress me with updates to the OS.
Chewy Posted July 21, 2011 Author Posted July 21, 2011 My Parallels isn't working and Google Chrome all but stopped working on it. I'm on Safari now which has been updated as well. I like it. I have always used "spaces" and they put a bit of a twist on it. Chris
DanFish Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 I'm actually hesitant to upgrade to Lion, I was reading some reviews, apparently Microsoft Office will not operate on the Lion OSX. Anyone have any problems like this?

Anyone have any problems like this? Yes... It doesn't... For now... It's pretty common to have non oem programs blow up on you. Parallels wasn't supposed to though. I updated it like they suggested... Hmm... Chris

I also have Parallels, haven't had a chance to install it yet though.
Team Adam's Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Google Chrome all but stopped working on it. This doesn't surprise me at all. Ever since android really started taking off (and I assume eating into the iphone sales) Apples been pretty staunch about fighting google. If you hadn't noticed ipad stock search engine WAS google... then all of a sudden after an update it was bing. Guess apple sees MS as less of a threat than google at the moment. LOL, its petty, but it is what it is.
LDM Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Office works for me, but I have the 2011 version. I think it's the 2004 version that's having the trouble. Overall I haven't used it long enough to form an opinion if I like Lion or not, but the first thing I changed was the new scrolling style. It's natural on an iOS device because it's like you're grabbing the page and pulling it up to scroll down. With a mouse though I think the whole up is down thing is a lot less natural. I set it back to the old way.
Team Adam's Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Trying to confim if office 08 is having the problem. I've read reports saying both yes and no.
Bill-V8V Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Before you jump all over this check to see how many Power PC applications you have, they will not work anymore. It took me some fancy file swapping to get my Quicken data back. Go to About This MAC More Info System Report Software Applications Anything listed as Power PC will no longer work.

I don't really have any Power PC apps so I seem to be good. I use the Windows version of Quicken with VMware Fusion and that seems to be working normally.
Z71_Denali Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 i love it how Mac makes OS upgrades cheap to current users. Microsoft you have to pay an arm and a leg!
LDM Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 i love it how Mac makes OS upgrades cheap to current users. Microsoft you have to pay an arm and a leg! We just have to pay a lot more for the hardware upfront...
Chewy Posted July 21, 2011 Author Posted July 21, 2011 My parallels issue was due to my spaces setup. They changed it to desktops and my parallels was set to a specific space which no longer existed. It's all good now! Dylan, you can pick which search engine you want. If they were anti-google they wouldn't allow easy imaping with mail and such. IMO they need each other. Sent from my iPhone4 using special algorithms and data nodes!
mcss383 Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I'll probably hold off for a little bit before I upgrade the MBP, I'm just glad they pulled their head out of their rear on adjusting window sizes and now you can drag all sides of a window. I can't believe it took them this long to fix such an obvious and insanely annoying problem. Can you double click the frame of a window to have it go full screen too? Wouldn't surprise me if they waited another 5-10 years to discover that problem. lol
LDM Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I don't really like this new Mission Control thing. I like to browse Safari with a bunch of open windows, and then I used to use Exposé to find the page I want and jump between windows. This new Mission Control groups windows by app so all my Safari windows are stacked on top of each other and I can't see what's what. You can "flick" that stack open to preview it, but the windows are still on top of each other and you can't see everything, or even all the pages. Maybe there's a way around this that I just haven't found yet but I like the old way a lot better. This is my biggest complaint so far.

I love it, But Bill is right. Microsoft Office/for the MAC 2004 will not work, I had to upgrade to Microsoft Office/MAC 2011. only power PC i use, so no big deal.

I do miss my spaces though... This new "desktops" is less efficient for me. This update to Safari seems SUPER quick! Chrome since the last update google sent out, was lagging. I guess I'm back to Safari for now. Chris
Bill-V8V Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I never really used Expose, but I am using Mission Control and I like it. It isn't stacking windows on mine but I don't have many windows or apps open at one time as I use tabbed browsing in FireFox.
TX GMC Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Hey so if I'm running leopard. Can I go straight to lion? Or do I have to upgrade to snow leopard. Then do lion?? I'm running 10.5.8. MacBook pro 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo Mistyped from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Anyone have any problems like this? Office 2011 works perfectly, not sure about other versions though... So I installed Lion (Mac OSX 10.7) on my MBP last night at home and then today on my work MBP. I never really use launchpad, and I've been using LION since the day the Gold Master was released a few weeks back... it's pretty cool, significantly faster, but needs a few patches before it's perfect. I love the new preview though, much better looking, and full screen apps are pretty bad-***. 5 copies / mac's per copy bought!! Its on my to-do list for later today... been waiting for lion. Snowleopard is great, but apple always manages to impress me with updates to the OS. Yup, and at 29.95, who can pass it up!! Yes... It doesn't... For now... It's pretty common to have non oem programs blow up on you. Parallels wasn't supposed to though. I updated it like they suggested... Hmm... I guess I'm back to Safari for now. Chris Yeah, I like spaces way way waaay more... or at least I did. I liked to pin things, and be able to arrange them, etc... But mission control has grown on me, and seems to play better with applications. They pin correctly when you drag them there, etc... but it'll take a while before I love it.
