Cover marks on Black Mercedes... removal?

DownhillA4

Question

Posted

Hey,

Joined after meeting Adam himself at the Detail Day in Norwood, NY. I'm quite OCD about keeping the paint on my car's pristine and have become perplexed about my newest project. Just recently inherited a 1991 MB 420SEL with 25k on it.

Problem- hood edges, trunk area, roof... have marks left by the car cover that was installed for many years. They are small grey area's close to the edges where the cover rubbed. The paint is flawless against scratches/dents aside from these small 2-3inch grey patches that I would like to get improved before I clear-bra the car. If anyone know of tips/DIY, write-ups or certain products to try, please help!

Thanks,

Evan

Thanks guys. Just tried Adam's Swirl/Haze Remover... no luck. I have the green Severe Swirl/Haze Remover that I will try once my Porter Cable comes in.

Rich... you are correct, it is a gem. Can't wait to get it on the road.

Edit- Green not blue.

Practice on your other car first, just to get the feel of the PC. But it won't take you long to feel comfortable :2thumbs:

I have no idea how hard or soft the paint is on a car like that, that is why I suggested the FMP with White pad first, always start with the least aggressive method first :2thumbs:

Jae, thanks it really is a beaut car & I can't wait as well!

Bill, I don't really have a car to "test" on. Just going to start my PC use at a super slow speed like I watched Adam himself demonstrate...

Aside from my newly acquired Mercedes, this is my real project/daily driver that is now done after winning first place at Waterfest. Hate to sound like a fanboy but Adam if your reading this... it was great to hear you say my paint on the Audi was awesome!

What a pristine paint job for a 91. Can't wait to see pics of it with the tires cleaned off with APC and dressed with VRT! And that paint being pretty much flawless black, some Brilliant Glaze and Americana :) :) :) oh yeah

Cool, I think the PC will take those out real quick

Just try FMP with the white pad first, I think that will be more than enough to get the job done.

Are you working by hand or with a PC ?

I assume you meant Green not Blue, correct ?

Blue is Revive and that is a prewax cleaner.

I'm guessing the cover left some fine scratches in the paint, nothing a little SHR and the PC can't take care of. Even the 4" pad would work on the PC.

:iagree:

Do you have any pics of the edges? Is the paint just dull in those areas?

Stupid me, I made the thread without specific pictures. I will take some tomorrow. Chris, your right, mainly just dull in those areas. Tried light compound and wax over it... lightened them up but still quite noticeable.
