TX GMC Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 So I know I've read somewhere you have to wait to do some stuff to paint that is freshly painted. My good friend just got his 68 or 69 mustang re painted, should be finished by Wednesday. He asked me when I could just put a coat of was and glaze on it. I told i don't know. What's the rule about new paint? Mistyped from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Chris@Adams Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Yea 60 days if it lives outside 90 days if garaged!
neogenix Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 I've been led to believe that this is no longer the case... from nearly everyone actually. Does anyone know for sure?
TX GMC Posted July 24, 2011 Author Posted July 24, 2011 I've been led to believe that this is no longer the case... from nearly everyone actually. Does anyone know for sure? Ya see, that's what I'm wondering. I'm sure we have a painter on the forum. Mistyped from my iPhone using Tapatalk
mcss383 Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 I have heard OEM doesn't need the 90 day wait since they paint with a different paint. I would wait 90 days, it just isn't worth the risk. I am playing the waiting game with dads 66 Chevy II SS, the hood was repainted and the shop doesn't know how to treat cars so the flawless paint is now all swirled/scratched.
G8toWRXdave Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 Im also wondering the same thing. My front bumper is new and painted with DuPont Cromax Pro paints. i cant find info on how long to wait before i can FMP and MSS and buttery wax.
Perez Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 why not just wait 90 days to be sure...problem solved
G8toWRXdave Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I didnt ask because im assuming they would say the 90 days. im basically going to wait the 60-90 days unless i find out its ok not to wait.
Saintmike Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 I just got my 68 camaro repainted with a base coat/clear coat paint. I watched the body shop sand it down with 2000 wet dry sand paper and then buff it with a heavy duty compound. I was told not to wax it for 90 days. I assume though that since a compound was used, it's ok to use swirl remover and polish to take out all the fine scratches they left when they compounded it and did that over the weekend. I'm not putting any wax or sealer until the 90 days are up. The water beads on it and it looks great now.
Bill-V8V Posted August 8, 2011 Posted August 8, 2011 Correct, you can use body shop safe polishes or compounds but do not seal or wax it for the recommended 60 to 90 days
kdii02 Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I'm in the same boat.. My car is in the shop getting the entire front clip repainted.. Man I'm gonna go nuts for 60-90 days without protection on it!! At least it will be a bit cooler when I do get to wax and seal it.
Cook Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I just had my girlfriends fender painted. I polished it the next day to remove their holograms.
Redvenm Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I just had my doors repaired and repainted last. I was told to wait 90 days before applying any wax or sealant.
Z71_Denali Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 to pretty much sum up what others are saying: New Vehicle: you can polish and wax all you want. the paint is heat cured at the factory and is VERY thin, so even if the factory didn't heat cure it, it wouldn't take very long. Repainted Vehicle: safe to polish as long as the paint is dry. wait 90 days to use any sealant or wax to allow the paint to cure. a car that has been repainted has a much thicker layer of paint/clear coat because it was done by hand, not efficient robots. a body shop usually does not heat cure the paint fully so that is why you should wait 2-3 months before sealing. note: just because a factory paint job is very thin, does not mean it is not safe to do a proper paint correction with compounds and polish. i believe it has been said you would have to use a FLEX several thousand times (properly) before you wear the paint off. once or even twice a year will not degrade the paint
Vincenzo Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 AT THE LEAST give it 60 days. My dad's 09 GT/CS had a new front bumper painted for it and the guy said 60 days at least, 90 if I can wait.
