PC on edges

musclejunkie

Question

Should I stay away from the edges with my PC? I'm detecting from some of the forum posts that this is a no no! I haven't noticed any damage, but it would stand to reason that these areas should be avoided. If so, just how do you PC a car without touching an edge? My Mustang has more contours and edges than the Rocky Mountains.

I wouldn't go directly ontop of an edge but there is no harm in going over the edge of an edge like the seams between doors, trunks, hoods, etc. If you have a sharp edge in the middle of a body panel, I would simply keep the pad from being directly ontop of it as in do not roll over the top of it.

With a PC, if the paint is in good condition and you don't go crazy with it I honestly don't see a problem with it. I never avoid edges/ridges with the PC.

Now if you are using a Flex or pure rotary, never ever go on top of an edge/ridge, you will eat the paint off FAST.

Its a case of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

The PC is highly unlikely to ever remove enough material from an edge to show up your base or primer, but that doesn't mean you should go buffing on edges with any intent.

Its often times harder on the pad than it is on the paint, the edge (depending on how hard it is) can easily grab the pad and cause tears.

So if you have no choice but to cross an edge, then yes - you're fine. If you can avoid them, then do.
