Product Review: Adam's Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

Junkman2008

Question

Adam's Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner (CUC) doesn't always get the love it deserves. The main reason why is because most folks don't understand exactly how it works, and that is the whole beauty of the product.

CUC cleans without the use of soap. If you talk to any professional carpet cleaner, they will tell you that the improper use of soap is the number one killer of carpet. What do I mean by the improper use of soap? I mean the use of soap without the ability to thoroughly rinse it from the carpet. For every 1 part soap you use, you need 10 parts water to rinse with. At that rate, your carpet will be soaking wet by the time you're done cleaning. For someone with a professional grade machine, this is not a problem. For the average Joe on his hands and knees, this is a major problem.

What this means is that you want to use a product that can clean your carpet without the use of any soap. That means a OXY-type product such as CUC. If used correctly, the results that you can achieve will be nothing short of outstanding. I was fortunate enough to receive a carpet cleaning machine from the good people at Hoover and used CUC as a test on these Lexus SUV floor mats. After spraying the mats down with CUC, I put the machine to work (because the absolute last thing I will ever do is scrub some carpet clean).

The pictures tell the story. This was rather effortless and for someone who is not going to expend a lot of effort, that was a good thing.

Some key things to remember when it comes to carpet cleaning. Like anything, preventive maintenance is the key to the preservation of anything that you own. When it comes to carpets, vacuum them as often as possible. Daily is the best case scenario, as frequent vacuuming does not allow dirt to embed itself into your carpet and create stains, as well as destroy your carpet. The more often you vacuum, the cleaner your carpet will remain and the longer your carpet will last.

If your carpet does become stained, the last thing you want to do is scrub the carpet clean. The not only destroys the carpet fibers, it spreads the stain around. The best method for cleaning carpet is to apply your cleaner and then dab the stain away. Most folks wait until the stain is fairly bad before they decide to clean their carpets and thus, resort to elbow grease in order to remove the stain. Dabbing will still work, but it will take longer and time is something that people don't seem to have a lot of.

If you decide to scrub your carpets clean, at least use a brush that will do the least amount of damage to your carpets as possible. Adam's has a Leather & Interior Brush that is pretty safe for this purpose. If I had to scrub on carpet, this would be the brush that I would use. Adam's does have a scrubbing brush designed for carpets but I actually use that on my rubber mats. It is great for that.

Remember, blot not scrub your carpets clean. If you can get a carpet cleaning machine, it makes cleaning your carpets less of a chore. Also, vacuum as often as possible (did I already say that?).

One last tip that may come in handy. If you ever spill anything red in color on your carpet, do not try and clean it with just any product. The only product that I have ever used that cleans red stains is a product called Red Medic. It only works on red colored stains and nothing else. You have to use a blotting action and a hot iron in order to remove the stain. It takes time, but it works.

Hi Junkman,

Help me understand: You said not to scrub the carpet but the machine you used has rotating scrubbing brushes that would scrub the carpet a lot.

Did you use the scrubbing brushes or did you not have them turned on?

Thanks,

This is a very good question as I was wondering the same exact thing when they sent me this machine. I was not aware of all the research and engineering that went into the design of those bristles, and how they are engineered to work. After talking with the manufacturer, I found out just how much engineering was involved.

The rotating brushes on that machine are not hard enough to unravel the threads of your carpet fibers, unlike the hand held brushes that you see for sell on the market. Those brushes are designed to agitate the dirt and flush it up to the surface, where it can be removed by the cleaning/vacuuming action of the cleaning wand. This same design is used in the bristles of your upright vacuum cleaners, which can be used daily to vacuum your carpet. Even with daily use, these vacuum cleaners will not destroy your carpet. As a matter of fact, it is recommended that you vacuum your carpet daily in order to get the longest wear out of it.

I was thinking of grabbing one of these this weekend.

Amazon.com: Bissell Auto Care ProHeat Compact Multi-Purpose Deep Cleaner, 14254: Home & Garden

What do you think? I am just tired of being yelled at my my mother when I use hers HEHEHE

Matt, I did a write up on this machine. I have it and like still continue to like it. For bigger jobs, hot water, Carpet and Upholstry Cleaner and the Adam's Shop Vac with Claw attachment work great also.

I don't have a clue, nor would I try that because the Adam's cleaner is not made to be used that way. Those machines have specific cleaners made for them and the ratio of cleaner to water is also specific.

I too was amazed by this product! One of those overlooked products that most people see and go, ahh I don't need that, my carpet is clean!

Not trying to hijack, just wanted to add a few pics that were done by hand with a towel and some small scrubbing using the carpet brush......

Thanks for the review AJ! I just purchased some of the product and have a weekend job that requires some carpet cleaning of some stains, what do you recommend as the saturation time for the product before beginning to blot or going at it with a cleaning machine?

It depends on the depth of the stain. I soaked those mats for around 5 minutes before I started. Whatever you do, don't work in direct sunlight or any condition that will allow the product to dry too fast. Then you'll just be wasting product. Also, I was able to make the product go further by soaking the stain with product and then using water to cause the product to sink deeper into the carpet. This will dilute the product some but as you can see by the mats, it still was very effective.
