4" focus pads on PC BEWARE

Fit08

Question

Just a word of warning to those who use the adapter for the pc 4" focus pads. I had the pad pop of the adaptor spindle twice. First time, ok not tightn enough I guess, so it was tight now. Second time, not so lucky, yes right into the paint down to metal with the PC :willy: Yes they maybe only "stone chip" size but on an unblemished surface, dang it I say.

So, moving forowrd it gets Blue loctite !!!:xfingers:

Of coarse my day does not end there. I had purchased the gen 2 PC pads but I had adhesion problems with the white pad (falling off backing plate). The other where not as bad so Ashley replaced the white one. Well today the others fell off just as I had reapplied product only to fall face first and got dirt in both pad faces. Well you know how long it takes to dry out after washing. So now down to gen 3 white to finish car as no back up pads to date. I can tell you the gen 3 pads sticks!!

I think I've clamed down now enogh to return to the process.....:pc:

I use a drill since I'm too lazy to remove the large backing plate from my PC. With my new black car tho, I'm not going NEAR it with those pads. I don't trust myself.

I popped mine out today when using, thankfully i caught it just as it touched the paint so I have a tiny mark that I was able to polish out mostly and I'm pretty much going to be the only one who knows it's there. I'm going to be super careful when putting them on in future... I may actually just buy 2 backing plates and glue each one in.

I use the 4" pads CONSTANTLY and have never had an issue like this... are you sure the adapter was fully tightened? Anymore the 4" is all I use on my PC since my Flex does the bulk of the large areas and I only need the PC for tight spots.

If it were anything less than safe I certainly wouldn't be using it in the situations I do, where the vehicle are valuable and/or don't belong to me... for example -

The washer is used to provide clearance for the wrench to fit on certain backing plates. Since the 4" backing plate uses an adapter there is plenty of room to fit the wrench and a washer is not needed. I would also try using a smaller counter weight as excess vibration may be the problem. I use a 6" weight with the larger Adams pads and the 5" (included with my PC) for the smaller pads. What speed are you using?

For you guys having problems with these backing plates coming off, are you using the little "O" ring, washer looking thing that comes with the PC?

If not, that could be the reason for loose backing plates.

Never seen one with the 4" kit ?? Loctite fixed this problem, but can't use it on drill now.:(

Nope, did not use it. Didn't see any instructions that I was supposed to use it. If we were supposed to use it -- it would be nice if there was an instruction sheet with the 4" pads/adapter telling us that.

This happened to me the first time I used the 4" focus pads... :help:

Ended up with a circle mark in my paint about 1/2" in diameter. Argh... Went clear through the clear coat!

I thought about using the locktite also... but I haven't had a problem with it falling off since that time. I tightened it (and have it setup for using it on the drill only). The drill attachment didn't feel loose like the PC adapter did. Was thinking about roughing up the threads on the PC adapter so that it wouldn't feel so loose.

The first few times using them after that initial time I was very nervous and careful to keep checking to make sure it wouldn't fall off... IF it happened to me twice I would be VERY nervous about using it and would talk to Adam's about replacing that part. Sounds to me like the part, or a combination of those two parts, are outside of tolerances. Now that I am thinking about it again... maybe I will call Ashley about the PC adapter... would be nice to have that option in the future.

Look forward to seeing results of using your 4" pads!
