Ashley@Adams
Okay, so I have been inspired by Adam's bike collection and decided to restore a 1969 Schwinn. I purchased it off Ebay and received the bike late last week. I thought I would share the process with you. This is my first one so hopefully I don't screw it up too bad. Here are some pics to see it's current condition:
Ashley@Adams
I've started by polishing the wheels. They are over 40 years old so they need some serious love. I used our Metal Polish #1 and after a few tests found that the Orange Hex Grip worked best. Polishing each spoke has tired me out!
krewsman
That will be very nice when you get it finished Ashley. Try some 0000 ("four ought") extremely fine steel wool on those spokes (you can get it at a woodworking supply house) with Metal Polish #1, then switch to your orange pad with MP #2. It'll eat up a whole lot less time! Do the same thing on the brake calipers and derailleur parts after you soak the whole mess in some kerosene & wash with APC to degrease the parts. Are you going to strip the old paint or just clean up what's there? I see some pretty blue underneath that white! Keep us updated!

I am going to repaint it for sure. I will do all the sanding but I haven't decided if I'm going to paint it myself or not.

b_pappy
Very cool Ashley, where do you find all the time? I thought you were here helping all of us 24/7? Can you get replacement decals for the frame? If not I know a great striper that could duplicate the original (assuming he sees it before you strip the paint). One of them looks like I can unscrew it before it's painted so I should be good there.

BRZN
Nice, I had a Schwinn Collegiate as a kid. Right about the same year too: mine was Red, my younger brother had one his was Green. No basket on the front though, not too cool for a boy! Have fun!

Ashley@Adams
I was out of town this weekend so haven't been able to do too much on the bike, but I did get it apart and the sanding process has begun.... I'm using an electric sander with 60 grit sand paper along with a wire wheel for the harder to reach areas.
pjwoolw
It would be easier to find a soda blaster to strip all the paint to bare metal right before its painted.
Adam
Ash, you are the bomb diggity! Good for you, and when it comes time to paint, let me know, we have a powder coat guy in the South Bay!

It sure would be, but that would be TOO easy. I want to put some blood and sweat into this project.
