Mike,

If you are planning on putting down new vinyl stripes I would actually suggest against doing anything in the area that you plan on putting down the new stripes... I say this because I do vinyl lettering for customers at my shop, and when I first started every once in a while I would have a customer that wanted their vehicle detailed at the same time. I found that if you do any claying, polishing, or waxing over the area you plan to letter or place a decal over, it ends up causing problems in the long run. I actually would have trouble with getting the vinyl to stick, and once it would stick... a few days later their would be an issue with the vinyl peeling off. I hope this helps you, and you can learn from my mistake... Good luck!

Can't agree more. I've done 3 cars already and wherever you put your new stripes it has to be totally clean and free of any wax or polish. Wait till the stripes are on and then detail the car.

Before I had my stripes done I clayed the whole car and polished the hood. figured I would get out any imperfections before he layed vinyl over them. No wax, no treatment, no nothing. I did a wash with alot of APC on the hood afterwords just to make sure no wax or polish residue was still on the paint. Funny enough, the one spot on my front bumper that I did not clay was the spot the stripe came up a bit on.

Thanks for the responses!! My plans where to just wipe it down with some APC to get some of the old adhesive off of it and then put them on..Just wasn't sure if I needed to wash and polish it since they have been covered up for the past three years.... Going to heed all the warnings and try not too mess them up today when I put them on...
