Mazda CX7 - First Customer Detail

As many of you know, I have started detailing full time for myself. And I finally got my first "real" customer (i.e., someone I don't know). So yesterday, we took the Sky around town to drum up some business and show off our skills. During a cold call to a car dealer we were surprised when they said "OK, go for it, there is a Mazda over there". We were not expecting to be working yesterday, but luckily we had everything we needed, with the exception of a bucket. The dealer was kind enough to lend us a bucket. The Mazda CX7 is a small cross over and it was black. The inside was in good shape but the outside had not been cleaned in a while, covered in salt, and had never seen a claybar. The engine was covered in a greasy dressing that needed to come off. It had a few interior stains on the drivers side door (ladies shoes) and on the tan interior. When all was done, as the sun had just gone down, the owner commented "Wow, it is even shiney in the dark." We did far more than thier ussual detailer, and for only 5 cents more. So here is what we did:

  • Treated the wheels, tires, exhaust tips, and engine with a 50/50 mix of APC.
  • Exterior wash with car shampoo, jumbo wash pad.
  • While the exterior was being washed, the interior was cleaned with leather and interior cleaner then treated with leather and interior conditioner.
  • Exterior dry with a leaf blower and great white drying towel.
  • Clay exterior surfaces, including all windows.
  • Flex one-step polishing with Swirl and Haze Remover and Machine Super Sealent using a yellow pad.
  • The tires were still dingy and hit again with full stregth APC and a scouring pad.
  • SVRT and In & Out Spray of the engine bay, exterior trim, and tires.
  • Glass clean in and out.
  • Vacuum.
  • Final wipe down with detail spray and double soft towels.

While the Mazda was being taken care of, there was a BMW Z4 that had some deep scratches on the front of the hood. Not deep enough to show metal but enough that the potential owner was not happy. One of the empoyees was trying to take care of it by hand with no success. So they asked for help from the "nice guys with the buffers." The entire car was already prepped, but not to our standards. The hood was quickly clayed, then SHR with the yellow pad on the front 2/3rds of the hood. The first 1/3 (whenrethe scratches were) was hit with Severe Swirl Remover and a green pad. Then, back to SHR and a yellow pad on the first 2/3rds, and white pad with Fine Machine Polish over the entire hood. Detail spray and a double soft towel and you had to really look to find where the scratches were. (it is always fun watching people try to find a scratch that isn't there anymore.)

 

Total time from when we arrived to when we left, 3 hours. We gave the client a single soft towel to keep the BMW and Mazda tidy, with an "Oooo" when he flet it for the first time. All in all, good day.

Care to elaborate on this? Sounds interesting and I'm always open to hear tips on speeding things up. I thought that the MSS didn't spread well with the Flex.

Did I say yellow pad, I meant orange.

 

The process is something I have been playing with and it seems to be working well. I did an X pattern with one swipe of each product until I just did 2 large dots of each. The mixture did not really flash, but the end result was pretty good, as you can see in the pictures. I am only doing this on the QUICKEST of details. (Customer wants the most results in the shortest possible amount of time). I mixed about 1/3 of a bottle of this mixture yesterday morning. I want to try it on a few more vehicles and refine the process before I get into more detail on the forums.

Pretty cool stuff, sounds like I have a lot to learn about mixing and speeding things up. Good luck on the proposal. If you need any help let me know, the flex and I are always ready. Work towards that flex, it is a good machine and well worth it.

Just curious you're using SHR with a yellow pad or a orange pad? Maybe it being a detail business thing Idk. Just trying to figure out why you did the things you did with the polishing.

I used the orange pad. My bad, I said yellow (I still have a couple of the old Adam's yellow pads floating around though.)
