It was bound to happen eventually, and today an LS9 from GM’s Performance Build Center became the 100-millionth small block Chevrolet built. The 638-hp engine will represent the 56-year history of the Chevrolet small-block, and will be set aside as part of GM’s collection.

The Chevrolet’s small-block’s contribution to the car hobby in general can’t be overstated. From Bonneville to Daytona, Chevrolet small-blocks have claimed victories and also powered the tow vehicles that got the teams and spectators to the races. With its 5th generation right on the horizon and the 1st-gen still in production for crate engines, the small-block looks to have a lot of miles left.

Just for the record, the 100-million total includes production, crate, marine, industrial, and even V-6 versions of the small-block.
