Z71_Denali
Any of you guys paint, epoxy coat, or seal your garage floors? i can't decide if i want to do it myself with something like U Coat It, or one from HD/Lowes, or if its best to hire a professional to do it. for those who don't already know, we're building a house, so the floor is going to be in great condition and easy to prepare. and its a 3 car garage with a 3 foot wide bump stop

Chewy
Before you do ANYTHING make sure the concrete is done curing. I'd have it professionally done, but that's just me wanting the warranty and not the hassle of doing it.

3PedalMINI
the ulitmate is the acrylic floor coating that HAS to be done by a pro, however it comes with an ULTIMATE price tag when we wired a car wash for a sound system they had the floor done in the lub bays. the garage was 30 feet deep and 80 ft long and it cost them close to 45k to do. It is still one of the most impressive floors ive ever seen have you guys seen this? my dads letting my redo my side of the garage and i was thiking about doing the floor. saw this the other day when pricing out coatings. they also have the epoxy coatings. give it a few seconds, their site is slow. 2-Part Epoxy Acrylic Garage Floor Coating | Behr Paint that u coat it product looks awesome! 249 for a 2 1/2 car garage is dirt. i wonder if i could talk him into doing his side of the garage

paoutdoorsman
I did our house garage floor with U-Coat-It - Base color, Fleck, and the Automotive Gloss top coat. It makes cleanup a breeze, and we love the look.
Tundra5-0
I was also looking into this. I also found Armorclad which is about the same price as U Coat it

I have the rustoleum stuff from Home Depot and whenever a hot tire gets on it the epoxy lifts and sticks to the tire. Granted it only happens with really hot tires when they sit bit it is annoying. I think if you prepare your floor correctly the U Coat It would be a great choice.
Marylander
I did the rustoleum kit from Lowes (I think) over a 40-year old, long-stained and contaminated garage floor. I scrubbed, washed, rinsed and prepped like crazy and it's holding up pretty well after about 4 years. Truth be told it there are two very small (quarter-sized) areas that are chipped up, but those were right over some deep-set stains that no amount of cleaning would remove (I actually went after them with a wire brush head on a power drill, to no avail). I don't have any issues with hot tire pickup. I think on a good, new (properly cured) floor and with good prep a home depot type kit would be fine. whiterp199
The lifting problem is not too bad with car tires, unless you pull in after just doing a burnout or shortly thereafter. :burnout:However I have had it lift when the tires got hot from pulling up the hill in our driveway in the snow and ice when the car spun alot. I also get a lot of lift from ATV's and dirtbikes. Anything with a nobby tire seems to lift it all the time when sitting. Also a few regular motorcyles have caused it to lift as well. We followed their prep to a t and went a little above and beyond. It was on an older floor but it was clean and in good condition.
DaytonaJae
i did mine using the Rust-Oleum kit at home depot. It works. I'm sure the U-Coat-It is better, but then it all depends on what you're after.
whiterp199
in their freaquently asked questions it is guarenteed not to "hot tire peel" I guess that throws out using the stuff from HD I did see that. I do not know anyone that has it though so I am hoping for a personal endorsement. The biggest thing I hate is how there are a few tire tread marks on my floor where the concrete shows through. Z71_Denali
thanks for all the input! i think the U Coat It will be a nice project one weekend before my wife moves there in August. i'm gunna have the house to myself for 6 weeks now the question is, what color flake to do i'm having the builders talk to the painters to see if they do it professionally and how much it costs. they wanted $380 each for the garage door openers which i thought was steep, haven't decided if i'm gunna do that myself or leave it to them. Did you think about the Jack shaft openers? Thats what I have on the lift side and will replace the other side when needed.I just bought my son one for his new garage. You can see the opener here. b_pappy
I had mine done and love it. The wife caught me mopping it one day and said "Oh, you do know how that thing works." I looked at her and said "I don't park my cars in your house." I had the guys do the footing up to the mud sill, really looks nice. Garage Envy did it, couldn't tell you which brand it is, guaranteed 5 years, and holding up to kickstands, trans fluids, hot sticky tires, etc. Bruce
3PedalMINI
talked my dad into u-coat-it the only rule is that the logos have to go in the floor, which i was going to suggest anyway but he said it before i did so i got excited that he wanted logos in the floor Audi logo on his side, BMW on my side with the Mini Logo Below it i found the thread over at corvette forums where he did the logo in the floor. The only thing that wasnt made clear was if the logo was layed on before he did the clear coat (that way the it was cleared in) or he cleared it then added the logo. I suspect he layed the logo down and cleared it in. Anyone want to chime in on how you do this? The things we get excited about eh?
Pureshine
I put floor tiles with padding down so the floor is soft and keeps the garage wormer durning winter. I had the garage insulated so during winter detailing keeps me warm.
LFairbanks
I made that mistake of using that garbage from HD and it really needs to be redone. I however don't have the time to spend doing it right now, so I live with it. The neighbor across the street did something similair to the product I have listed below. His floor still looks new. I don't use Behr paint on the inside not sure why I used it on my garage floor. H&C® Shield-Crete® Epoxy Concrete Floor Coating One thing that I might add is. And you will need a helper to hold the other end. Close your garage door, have your helper hold one end of a chalk line up against where the door closes and you the other. Chalk a line and paint up to that line. And use blue chalk. Not RED.
