What to Charge a Family Member?

egott_91

Question

Hey guys and gals,

I gave my dad's fiance a quote on 4 options to detail her Envoy for her. Here's what they were and prices that I quoted.

Option 1 ($60):

Clean wheels/tires

Strip Wash

Buttery Wax

Dress tires/trim

Option 2 ($100-$120):

Same as option 1

Add:

Clay

Sealant (Quick or Machine and Glass)

Option 3 ($200):

Same as option 2

Add:

3 Step Polishing (not complete perfection, just a couple passes of each step)

Option 4 ($225):

Same as option 3

Substitute:

Americana for Buttery

She said she would clean the interior, so I would just be working on the exterior.

This vehicle is daily driven and does not get properly washed on a regular basis. The chrome wheels are pitting and starting to get actual rust spots on them, is there any way they might be able to be restored? If she went with option 3 or 4 I planned on taking metal 1 and 2 polish to them to bring back some luster, but I'm not sure if it's even worth it at this point. I know it's hard to see w/out a picture, but I'm trying to describe them the best I can. They have been driven through multiple winter seasons in Northern Indiana, so they have seen salt, sand, dirt, all kinds of crap that sat on them for a good amount of time.

Anyways, the real purpose of this thread is to get an idea of what you guys think is a "fair" price to charge for a detail on a family members vehicle. Are my prices I quoted reasonable for what's included in the options? Or are they low/high?

Thanks guys!:patriot:

Totally personal choice. If ya don't like your dad's fiance then your prices seem good. For me if I do my immediate families vehicles I don't ask for anything. Granted both of my brothers still give me money anyways. My parents..don't ask for anything don't want anything won't take anything. Still owe them for life ;)

Seems cheap, but I don't detail for anyone else. I'll help and show them, but I won't do the whole car. My three keep me busy enough.

If I detailed for someone and it was the whole gambit, it'd be 400+. I'm a perfectionist though.

Ha. I like her, she wouldn't let me do it for free, that's just who she is. Same way with my dad. He offered to pay me for doing his vehicles. I try not to charge them rediculously though. So, you think I should reduce them a little?

If I was doing it for someone that I didn't know very well, yes, I would be charging about $350+ for the whole shabang depending on what sealant and LSP they chose.

If they want to pay ya tell them what your cost is and how long it took you and leave it at that. At least that's just my opinion. Maybe they can cover your cost of supplies.

There is always the debate on what to charge for detailing. If it is family, I could not charge them. I do alot of friends and friends of my wife. 45.00 for a wash and wipe down, now wax.. touch up tires and interrior. takes all of about 2 hours max. If I add wax to it, make it 60.00, If it is a SUV 55.00 and for wax 70.00. If I need to get the PC out,, start at 110.00 for the basic.

I offer extra items such as engine touch up,,, polishing the headlights,, and glass cleaning.

Note: I do this on the side on the weekends. I am not a pro, and still working on perfecting my skills. So I do not charge like a pro. If I had the skills like that of Dylan, The Adams Shine Crew, AJ or some of the other cats here, I would demand more. I have heard like 35.00 and hour somewhere in that area should be good for starting.

Maybe tell her,, you do the car,, she hook you up with a big dinner or something, and some beer. something like that. Use her ride to get your skills down. Practice makes perfect

Id say those are pretty legit prices singe your not a professional. the minute you get more experience and a business name and paying for insurance and stuff like that is when your prices get raised. Id say give her those and see what she says, I have never charged family though so I cant say much more about that haha

My family rate is very, very low. I can't see charging either my sister or my parents. That's just me. If my uncles or cousins needed something, they would be getting a 40% off retail price.

Sounds like you have it figured out. I would though, throw in a freebie of something, even though she is paying you...she's gonna be your stepmother.
