So after I clay....

Adamized

Question

Posted

So later today I'm going to rewash my car " I did a horrible job yesterday," and clay it.

After I clay I know there will be detail spray all over the body panels. Should I re wash or just begin to polish over it. I've heard you can do both but what are the pros and cons?

my short experience with chamois is the quality is just not there, compared to a good, thick 80/20 blend microfiber. you have more chance swirling the paint with one as well. i've had many different types of towels and the Adam's double soft is the BEST!

for cleaning up clay residue after claying each panel i prefer the waterless wash waffle towel because it absorbs A LOT of liquid compared to the single and double softs which are made to remove polish/wax

ah ok, so i should stop drying my car with a chamois as well?

Mist the wet car with DS and then dry. Two steps in one, and if it helps me avoid 2 water spots (= repolishing a panel) it's worth it.

(And yes, I am the guy that rinses the car first, foams the car, rinses the car again, then foams the car again, and only then touches the finish with a wash pad.)

Dried DS won't hurt a thing... I've left it on for days.

:iagree:

Reconstituting dried Detail Spray and wiping it off is much easier than removing dried water spots. As a result, when I dry here in the florida sun, I mist the entire car with detail spray first and then dry. Depending on the temp, humidity and sun position I will end up with some Detail Spray spots toward the end. But it only takes another light mist to enable the dried Detail Spray to just wipe right off.

On the other hand, I used to just mist one panel at a time with Detail Spray and then dry that panel. By the time I got to the last panels on the car I had water spots that wouldn't just wipe off, even with Detail Spray. Sooo, I changed the routine and now mist the entire car first. Works much better for me.

I think this might also vary depending on your location and time of year. Here in TX you can't think about leaving detail spray/water on your car that long without it drying.

I have done this on a few cars, but if the car was super trashed and the clay was nasty dirty, I found that the pad got dirty and clogged up fast!

You guys are both correct. I wouldn't do this on a vehicle that was in BAD condition before claying, nor would I do this outside in direct sunlight.

When I attended the clinic in Denver a few weeks ago, I watched Adam leave the DS on the car after claying and go straight into polishing.

I've done it on 3 cars since then and it's amazing how much time and towels it saves by omitting that extra wipe-down! It also keeps down the dusting if you happen to generate too much heat of use too much polish on your pad.

Either way will work! If you don't have a ton of time and/or towels, just polish through it!

just polish over it or wipe it off after each panel with a WW towel! no sense in wasting another half hour to an hour dragging the equipment and products our to wash and dry it!

reason i say WW towel is because you use a lot more DS when claying than you do when your doing a quick detail at a show or just after a wash. the WW towels absorb a lot more liquid than the single or double softs do.

I would recommend removing the detail spray/water after claying with a clean microfiber. It will lead to a clean foundation and not let any unwanted leftover junk in your pads ;)
