2011 Range Rover and 1961 Corvette

Sam B. Bishop

Question

Hi, I live in the Chicago area and new to machine polishing. I have washed and waxed my cars, but never polish them, in the pass I’ve always used a professional detailer to do the polishing. After visiting the forum and reading different material on detailing techniques, I realize that I had been washing and waxing my cars incorrectly.

The two cars that I have detailed are a 2011 black Range Rover Sport my daily driver and a 1961 red Corvette. I purchased the Adam’s products to take care of the corvette, but had to practice on the Range Rover.

I made my first Adam’s purchase on 12/5/2011 and joined the forum on 12/14/2011 to learn the proper detailing and paint correction techniques. My initial purchase included the “Adam's Ultimate Flex XC 3401 VRG Polisher Kit’ and some additional supplies and subsequent to the initial purchase I made two additional purchases.

As a first time machine polisher I found the Flex to be an excellent polisher. I do not want the first time user like myself to read this and say the Flex is their answer to paint correction. I spent the last 4 months reading different threads on the forum and have learned that it is a combination of the tools, products, knowledge, techniques, and experience that give you the best results. I also learned on the forum that contrast makes the most significant impact on how good the vehicle is presented, specifically the thread that Dylan did on the Nissan Murano (the before and after). In this thread, you see more than just shiny paint, you see dressing on the trim, tires, clean windows, clean interior, clean engine bay, and etc., the contrast of these items against the shiny paint bring it all together.

Here are the tools and products I used.

Tools Used:

1. Flex 3401VRG

2. Gen3 Orange Pads (just got my Gen4 pads)

3. Gen3 White Pads (just got my Gen4 pads)

4. Americana Hex Grip Applicators

5. Blue Hex Grip Applicator

6. Pro Tire Apps

7. Block Sponges

8. Fire Hose Nozzle + Shut Off

9. 2 Buckets w/ Grit Guards

10. (2) JUMBO Professional Wash Pad

11. Metro Blaster Sidekick

12. Black & Decker Cordless Drill

13. Turbo Stick Wheel Cleaning Tool

14. Boulder Blonde Boar's Hair Wheel Brush

15. Fender & Tire Brush

16. Trim & Lug Nut Brush

17. Double Soft Microfiber towel, Single Soft Microfiber towel, Great White Microfiber Drying Towel, Microfiber Waterless Wash Towel, Microfiber Glass Cleaning Towel and Edgeless Microfiber Utility Towel.

Products Used:

1. Car Wash Shampoo

2. All Purpose Cleaner

3. Green Wheel Cleaner

4. Detail Spray

5. Waterless Wash

6. Glass Cleaner

7. Leather & Interior Cleaner

8. Leather & Interior Conditioner

9. Metal Polish 1 & 2

10. Swirl & Haze Remover

11. Fine Machine Polish

12. Revive Polish (used as a cleaner and spots the Flex could not get to)

13. In & Out Spray

14. Super VRT

15. Invisible Undercarriage Spray

16. Quick Sealant

17. Clay Bar

The paint corrections on both the Range Rover and Corvette were minimal. Since the paint on both cars are in great condition, I used the Swirl & Haze Remover + Orange Pad to correct only those moderate swirls and scratch spots and made one complete pass with the Fine Machine Polish + White Pad.

2011 Range Rover Before. I used the Range Rover to practice on and was happy with the results on my first try.

Welcome, and nice Rides! Whats the yellow thing on the garage floor?

BJoe the yellow thing is a washdown pad. I do not have a floor drain in the garage, the washdown pad capture the water and allow me to wash my cars in the garage. I use my wet/vac with a transfer pump to vacuum the water off the pad and use the transfer pump on the wet/vac to transfer it to the drain. It is great during the winter months, not only I can wash my car but it catches all that snow and salt that drains off the car.
