Washing with dish soap

s_morrison57

Question

I read on a Zaino site that to remove all the wax etc from your car so you can start the polishing and waxing etc process that Dawn dish soap was the product to use, since I've been looking into better techniques and procedures I've been told that you should never use dish soap, even Dawn says not to wash your car with their product on their site. OK, what do you use to remove all products from your cars paint so you can start at the beginning again?

The original blue Dawn is fine to use as a strip wash to remove the wax. I believe they say NOT to use it to wash cars because it does remove the wax.

Or you can use a couple ozs of Adam's Shampoo and a couple ozs of Adam's All Purpose Cleaner in your wash bucket to remove the wax!

Oh...good post I didnt even think about this - so we should strip wash our cars with All purpose cleaner before we start the process ? What are the pros and cons ?

Not trying to highjack your thread - but this is on the same level....I plan on doing my DD Malibu soon that I used to use TW Spray wax on every other week.....so there is alot of wax on this car.....I should strip it first..huh ?

No harm can really come from washing your car with dawn dish soap, the reason they discourage it is it will strip waxes and protection from the paint. So in essence if thats the task you're trying to accomplish its a good choice for that.

The only concern that you could potentially make an argument for is trim as repeated cleanings with harsher detergents will dry it out, but it would take an excessive amount of washing and neglecting to ever dress those surfaces for it to ever be an option.

The warning should technically be "don't use dawn as your regular wash soap"

I personally have gone to using a mixture of our APC with Car Wash... all thats needed to strip is something slightly acidic or alkaline to remove the wax/sealant. Using our car shampoo (pH neutral) and adding just a few oz's of APC to make it slightly acidic gives you a strip washing mixture that you can ultimately control the aggressiveness of.

Also, I find this mixture foams/suds up far better than dawn which is nicer to work with as well.

Its recommended you strip wash before doing any complete detail that includes paint correction. It saves your clay and pads from becoming clogged up with 'dead' wax material as its removed in the polishing process.

FWIW - even a weekly use of a spray wax product isn't going to build up any meaningful amount of actual wax on the surface... but thats another discussion.

I just started mixing Dawn with Adam's Shampoo. My hope is that it is stripping the wax and maintaining the PH nuetral qualities. I am not 100% sure it is doing what I want. Dylan, any thoughts?

David, you are better served to use APC in lieu of Dawn into the mixture. Dawn is in my opinion, too slimy for washing/stripping.

dawn dish soap will remove wax on your car. clay bar it then wax it and you will get a great shine.

Anytime you clay, you need to at least use Revive before you wax.

Wash claybar and wash again before wax ????

If you're going straight to a wax from claying your car, then yes. Wash the car first. If you're going to polish your car right after you clay, then a wash isn't necessary at that point.

When you wash after claying, you're removing any residue that's left over after claying. That way you have a clean surface to wax. If you didn't wash, you'd wax the car with all that residue still on the car. And it wouldn't be easy to get off.
