I still use them. Regardless of the foam gun there is still dirt and grime all over the vehicle that needs to be removed. So I wipe it down with the wash pads then perform the 2 bucket step before letting the pad touch the vehicle again.

 

Even if there isn't really any dirt I'd rather perform this process since it could be the reason your paint has imperfections!

Edit for clarification... Sometimes I do cheat. But only if the car is not very dirty and when I do cheat. I rinse the sponge before putting it back in the one bucket of soap. But 99% of the time it's a 2 bucket wash for me.

 

Same here, just had that flowing through my head so I said what the hell I'll just ask.

Maybe I wasn't too clear with some of the details. My bad.

 

 

Fill up both buckets with water

Put my wash pads/mitt in the water (side for the clean water & shampoo)

Foam up car

Take wash pads/mitt to wipe upper portions of the vehicle

During that process scrub wash pads/mitt into designated dirty water side with grit guard.

Return to clean side for a quick rinse

Work on wiping down next areas of the vehicle

I would say when you wash that there are two areas to consider, the upper cleaner area, and the lower/dirtier areas. Above the midpoint line on the side of the car is the cleaner area (not including the nose or rear). The dirtier areas are the front end and the rear, along with areas below the midpoint line on the side of the car.

 

Rinse the heck out of the car first to get every bit of dirt and crud off the finish before you go any farther. Then foam the car, then (starting on the upper part of the vehicle with the upper area pad) use a freshly-scrubbed-on-the-grit-guard soap bucket pad on your finish for a couple of strokes. Flip the pad, do a couple more strokes on the car. Then take that dirty pad and rinse it and scrub it off in the rinse water bucket on the grit guard. Remove the pad from the rinse water, wring it out over the blacktop (not over either bucket).Then move that pad again into the soap bucket, and scrub it in there on the grit guard before taking that wash pad to the finish again. You do not want to have any dirt on the pad when you touch the finish, nor do you want to take the opportunity add extra into either bucket if you can help it, hence the wringing it out over the pavement.

 

Do the same technique with the lower area pad when you get below the mid-line of the side of the car and use the lower pad from there down, which also includes the front end and rear of the vehicle. These are the dirtiest parts of the car, so lower=dirtier. I make sure that I don't miss spots, since they would be dirty and get that dirt rubbed into the paint when drying the car.

 

Obsessive? Perhaps. Does it work? Yes. I wash my black paint carefully to minimize my time polishing, and maximize my time having a nice swirl free finish. And I wash it every weekend, weather/schedule permitting, so if I did a crummy job it would cause me to be polishing a lot more often.

I actually spray off the pad, then dip into bucket 1 and agitate against the GG and then out and squeeze excess water out and into bucket 2 and agitate against the GG and then hit the car, making one and only one pass, then flip for a second pass and then start the process over.

 

It takes me a while to clean the car and I do that twice with a rinse and foam before starting again.

 

Have I said I'm done with black yet? lol
