liquidred Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 What is the best way to get oil stains out of concrete? I changed the oil on my car and spilled my bucket as it flowed down the driveway......Any ideas?
dipolley Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Kitty litter or oil absorbant. Spread over the spill then step on it and grind it in. Do this until you get all of the oil up that you can. Might take a couple of rounds. Then reasses the situation. If you are happy then leave it be. you can then use a cleaner to to get the rest up. If you have a power washer it will help the second phase.
Big O Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 You can take a piece of 2x4 and use that to rub and rub on the floor dry to absorb as much oil as you can. It's gonna be tough since the driveway is broom finished and not smooth like a garage floor.

If you have a power washer it will help the second phase. What Dave said....then when your ready to move on the second phase.... Step 1. Remove as much of the motor oil from the surface of the concrete driveway as possible. The two easiest ways to get rid of motor oil are to place oil absorbent pads over the area, or to cover the stained area with kitty litter. If using kitty litter, let stand overnight or grind it into the cement with the heel of your shoe. Step 2. Place the oil-soaked materials you used in plastic bags. This material must be disposed of properly. Take the plastic bags to the landfill and place them in the designated hazardous waste container. Step 3. Pour a half cup of laundry detergent or hydrocarbon mitigation agent over the stained area. You may need to use more than a half cup if the stain is large. Let the detergent or agent sit for a few minutes so it can penetrate the stain. Step 4. Scrub the stained area with a push broom or scrub brush. Work the laundry detergent or hydrocarbon mitigation agent into the stain. Add a little water to the area, preferably warm, and scrub the area again. If using laundry detergent, leave on the stain overnight, then proceed to Step 5. If using hydrocarbon mitigation agent, proceed immediately to Step 5. Step 5. Rinse the stained area until all the detergent or hydrocarbon mitigation agent is gone. Let the area dry. If it’s clean—enjoy! If not, you may need to repeat the process. Courtesy of a quick goodle search on emulsifiers....once you have gotten most of it up with Dave's suggestion, or possibly all of it, they key is emulsifying the oil that has soaked into the pores of the concret and brining it to the surface. Lather that soap up so it has a chance to attack the oil and work it out of the concrete.
liquidred Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Wow thanks a lot! I will try it out for sure, it has been raining all weekend on it so I have had no chances to get it out yet. But when it stops I will try it out. Thanks!
