THE Mook
Morn! LONG TIME COMING! Finally made time to treat Dad's Chevelle like I have wanted to last week, for his 60th Birthday. I intended on doing paint correction, glaze and wax, the interior, dress everything, the engine bay, and polish all metal. I am happy to say, I got all but the engine done. I spent the better part of last Tuesday with the Flex, SHR, and FMP, getting the paint to where I would be happy with it. Came back on Saturday morning to glaze, wax, dress it all again, hit the interior, and spend a majority of the time polishing the Chrome and Metal on this awesome piece of history. I would say of the 6 hours I spent Saturday, all but one hour was spent polishing metal. My ProceSS: After knowing last year, that JD and I had given this thing a quick once over, and also that the paint then was left just really shiny, not really corrected, I knew I had my work cut out. I started by using Waterless Wash and WW Towels to give the car a dry bath. From there it was onto Claybar using Detail Spray as a lubricant. The Flex came out and the Chevelle was treated to two passes each of SHR on the Orange Polishing Pad, and FMP on the White Polishing Pad. That was all I really wanted to get after with the polisher. Given the age of the paint, I wasn't sure I really wanted to let SSR run amock all over it. After a good 5 and a half hours of work on Tuesday, it was time to wrap up and head over to the Warehouse to throw some boxes and help move. I knew I wouldn't be getting back to this until Saturday morning, and easily I had more work than time left. Saturday Morning finally came around, and I must say I didn't really sleep Friday night, out of pure excitement to get back started. Today it was time to pull it out in the sun, make sure I was content with the polishing of the paint, and move on to the metal polishing part. I made sure to dress the tires with two passes of SVRT before applying any metal polish to the wheels. I used the Flex for the Bumpers, and a corded drill for all of the metal trim pieces on the car. I started at 9AM and finished (keeping in mind, I needed to be back at my parent's house by 4PM to start cooking for the whole party...40 people big), at 2:45 PM. Only stopping because I was filthy dirty. I didn't get to the engine bay, but did get the interior a nice cleaning with Leather and Interior Cleaner, then dressed all what I could inside with SVRT. I attempted to remedy the dashboard, which after 46 years of sun beating, looks bad. I mean bad. Real bad. Didn't really make a dent in it...sometimes things just are too far gone. Overall, I am pretty happy with how it came out. You can see quite a difference in the metal trim pieces and whatnot. I will also have to sneak over some time this week and grab some interior shots...never did get the afters there. Dad was super excited and very grateful I was able to spend some time on it. He kept taking all the party guests out to see it on Saturday night. I may have also taken on an original paint '57 Chevy in the upcoming weeks...time will tell. PICS! Before: Video Anyone? During! Complete! Even in bad lighting, this Chrome was lighting the place up...and the heat was beginning to take it's toll too. Mook Polished, Tek's Face Begins to Melt...Stop Staring, Dog! Gratuitous Von Kliesting on Really OLD Paint: The Mic Drop shot: Thank you all for stopping in. My dad was and still is very happy that I was able to do this for him. All of my uncles and cousins that saw it were amazed at how well it came out. I also feel really good about this one. Mook
