mikegeaney Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I currently have a multi-room DVR via FiOS. It is buggy, the boxes lock up, and it's not exactly cheap. I used to have a TiVo thru DirecTV many moons ago. Does anyone here have TiVo? I am specifically interested in the Elite model that has 4 tuners and streaming capabilities. I was thinking of getting that plus an XL and connecting them either via ethernet or using The MoCa network of FiOs. If anyone has any direct experience with the newer models and streaming between them I would appreciate any insight you can provide. Thanks.
3PedalMINI Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Im a dealer of tivo and if im called into do a full system the customer gets a tivo, no questions or im not doing the job. I have wasted more time then i care to share dealing with the sh!ty cable boxes crapcast and fios provide. I have tivo's in my house and not one of them has ever had to be reboot (8 months going strong) i have maybe 120 of them in the field and 1 took a dump but thats not nearly as many cable boxes that poo all over the place MRV is a bit different then your used to, if you dont have them hardwired networked you better have a strong WIFI system to be able to handle the streaming from one box to another. When you hit the tivo button you have all your options and all the tivos that you have connected are then displayed and labled "den, patio, bedroom, kids room etc" but you have to have other tivos in those areas to view whats on each others box. so if you have waking dead on the den tivo and want to watch it from another room you have to navigate to the "den" box then select walking dead. the same goes for if you have this old house recorded on the bedroom tivo and you want to view it on the den then you navigate to the bedroom tivo fios is miserable to deal with with the M-Cards. Basically be prepaired to have the tech come out without the cards and then have to reschedule. Also have him bring 2-3 cards out because those m-cards are worse then cable boxes in DOA category. Netflix streaming is useless through tivo so make sure your not buying it for that capability either. All in all its awesome and myself and clients love it. Its nice not getting a call at 930 at night asking why their box is frozen either do it, you wont look back
mikegeaney Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 Thanks Brendon. I have heard about the issues with the M cards, but have also heard it has improved. Turns out that I have a local FiOS storefront that I can go into to turn in their DVR and supposedly get the M cards on the spot. I'm fine with the whole navigating from box to box. I figure 99% of the recording will be done on the Elite as that has 2TB which should be plenty of space to watch in that main room. We'll just stream from the master bedroom to/from that box. My kids won't like it as they will lose out on the deal. I'll buy 2 TiVo's but not 4. I figure if I make it too comfortable for them here they might never leave. I'm also hearing that TiVo is coming out with some new box that sound like a stream only device to be used in secondary rooms connected back to a main box. That could be interesting. Thanks again.
