Ok guys.... i attempted to clay for the first time today.. my wifes SUV is white and severely negelted! when i looked at the top it was actually black with dirt!! anyways.. i washed with Dawn (2x's) to remove any wax (if there was any), pulled into the garage and began the claying process.. i kept rubbing and rubbing, but i was noticing faint streaks in the paint.. kinda reminded me of the black stripes you get on your gutters after a while. Thought they would disappear, with clay but they didn't. Also noticed some little brown "rust" colored spots on the rear hatch. I clayed til my arm was numb, they didn't come out!! Once i waxed, the streaks weren't noticeable, but they are still there?? Was this operater error or something else?? Thanks in advance for any responses!!!!

So the redish things on your hatch is what's called "rail dust" it's iron deposits in the air from a railroad, factory etc that land on your paint and begin to "rust" if it's not coming out with clay then you need a product called "iron cut" you spray it on and let it sit until it turns red then use a pressure washer and hose it off. It's most noticeable on white paint but all cars get this. I have black vehicles and even though they are mostly garage kept we live 2 miles away from a railroad and when ever I polish i use iron cut andI am amazed how much it pulls out. I wish adams would develop this type of product, it's more a necessity then a nice addition IMO.

As far as the black stains how much detail spray are you using , can you take a pic? I suspect it will go away when your polishing. You did wash the vehicle before claying correct? Just want to make sure :)

Can you post some pics.

Clay will take off surface contaminates like sap over spray from paint etc. you may need to machine polish the roof to get the streaks out. As for the rust spots is the paint chipped or cracked by the rust?

Sorry.. no pics.. i think the streaks would be hard to capture. u have to be at just the right angle and lighting to catch one.. as for the spots, the paint is not cracked, just looks like surface rust. Also i probably was excessive with the detail spray!! And also i washed twice before the clay!

If you do the baggie test, what do you feel now? If those spots/streaks feel smooth now then you have most likely done as much as you can with the clay.

The next step I would try would be revive polish or stepping through the normal machine polish process.

it is most definitely rail dust :2thumbs: you can clay all day and wont do a thing, this will take care of it.

Thanks guys... after the baggie test, the paint is smooth as a baby's bottom.... looks like some iron cut, and possibly a machine polish is in the future!!! However ther is a silver lining... i was looking at purchasing the PC DA polisher kit but couldn't convince myself or my wife to let me pull the trigger...guess i don't have a choice now!!! :2thumbs: (p.s. my wife's suv is no reflection of how i meticulously care for my truck!!! )
