ChargerMatt Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 It refers to when the paint gets porous like the outside of an orange peel. From what? IDK.
Ralfy Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 orange peel is how the clear coat looks when its first laid down, to get rid of it the car needs to be wet sanded and buffed out. if you look at your car in the right light you can see the finish looks like an orange peel, idk if i explained it right or good enough maybe someone else can.

MichiganSRT8 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Guess that means I'm stuck lookin like an orange haha look at chris's link thats got a good description. Another pic I like to use is this one, its a picture of a reflection off while paint. the light source is a fluorescent tube lamb above, without the peel it would be clear, but with the orange peel you can hardly even tell the outline of the light.
Jasssc Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 A friend of mines 87 BMW e30 has orange peel, I think its like 90% of the car. Any way to fix it, would wet sanding the whole car be practical at all?
PacificNWBuckeye Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Wet sanding is about the only way to correct orange peel if it's severe. It's not a step to try without some experiance.

PacificNWBuckeye Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Gotta learn somewhere! Give me the worst case scenario just in case. Go to far and into the paint? Worst case, you take off too much and get into your color and that will need a respray. I'm no detailer, but I have painted a few cars in the past and had to wet sand some runs and orange peel. You need to go slow, use a backing block for the sand paper (don't want your finger tips to push through unevenly). I'm sure you can findsome good info online, maybe even a Brother in his Garage production.
LFairbanks Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 You will most definately need one of these. Any good body shop supply house will carry them. And some 3000 and 2500 grit sandpaper. When I bought mine the sandpaper only came in 25 sheets per package and the two were 75 bucks together. Other grits were able to be purchased individually. It may be different where you live.
