ChargerMatt Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I'm looking for a new laptop. Has to be 15" and have a great battery life. Things I do on it: -Browse forums -Music -Downloading -Streaming -School work Must haves: -15" -Good battery life -Backlit keyboard (not a deal-breaker) Price range... IDK, I'm not worried about it too much.
egott_91 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I have a MacBook Pro and love it. Little more on the expensive side though.
ChargerMatt Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 I have a MacBook Pro and love it. That's definitely my last resort. I don't know much about computers, but I do know something about marketing and branding and that Apple products are not worth the money.

I find them so much simpler to use than Windows based products, but to each their own.
IMADreamer Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 You should definitely get a Mac if you want to pay double to do the same thing. Other wise I've had great luck with the Toshiba Satellite series. I'm running one at work in the shop, and we have two at home. They are cheap and will do what you need them to. However I don't know if they have a backlit keyboard option so that might leave them off your list. Battery life is generally around 4 hours for mine.

IMADreamer Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Is that 4 hours on max settings? That's on the "balanced" setting. So it's between preformance and eco modes.
Chewy Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 They're not for everyone. I find them so much simpler to use than Windows based products, but to each their own. Yep! Don't knock what you haven't tried! I have of course used both and while PC's DEFINITELY have their place, I sure do like being able to open up the laptop and just use it. The battery life is AWESOME! I was SO over buying a ton of different pieces of software and running them constantly so that my computer wasn't somehow corrupted. For now, I'm a Mac user, unless MS comes out with something more user friendly and feature rich in the future. I'm not close minded... If MS or someone else offers something better, I'm on it! Chris
egott_91 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I agree with Chris. I run a PC at work and a Mac at home and at school I use either.

Chris First off let me say, buy what you like and love it. I'm not trying to change any minds here and I've used Mac's before they are certainly capable machines. One thing though I've never understood is the virus/corruption/whatever arguement. In all of my life as a PC user I've never once gotten a virus. I don't know if the people who do are looking at a lot of porn, or what but it's never been an issue for me. As for security I just run the windows security thing and that's it.
ChargerMatt Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 The thing that does draw me to Macs is the fact that they don't have any security flaws (yet). I pay 40 a year for a spyware blocker and it runs daily, it also updates daily. Sometimes it's a huge pain in the ole tookis. Combined with a firewall/virus scanner, they aren't capable of running at their best performance.
savi01 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I would suggest sticking with an Intel-based laptop, either the new Ivy Bridge i5 or i7. Both are amazingly quick and pretty good on the battery. Now keep in mind that no matter how much a manufacturer will claim the battery lasts, it's all based on WHAT YOU'RE DOING. If you're running a couple programs while listening to music while having your screen brightness all the way plus having your power settings set to high performance, you won't see anywhere as near battery life as the manufacturer claims. If you reduce the brightness, select "balanced" or "power saving" mode (Windows btw) then you'll get a lot more juice out. As for recommended brands, Toshiba's are really great, as well as Sony Vaio, Asus, and Lenovo. Dell/HP probably offer more deals now and then, but I've found their quality to be so-so. My current laptop needs to be upgraded, but it's a 2006 Sony Vaio w/ Intel Core 2 Duo T550, still runs solid. Again, it's all on how you use it. Keep an eye out at Slickdeals: The Best Deals, Coupons & Discounts on Laptops, Computers, LCDs, TVs, Dell, HP, Apple, Amazon and TechBargains: Best Deals, Dell Coupons, Cheap Laptops, Computer Sales , some of the best laptop deals are listed there. Edit: As far as the virus topic goes, Mac's aren't invincible. Search "Flashback" virus for the most recent major outbreak on Mac's. They are less common on Mac, sure, but you can avoid them just as well on Windows; just don't be visiting weird websites and download things w/o thinking first.
ChargerMatt Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 So, I'm looking at the dv6tqe by HP. I'd add the 9 cell battery and back-lit keyboard. Any thoughts about this?
Z71_Denali Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 alienware! i don't own one but i always thought they were pretty cool, but they only do 14" , 17" and 18"
ChargerMatt Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 alienware! i don't own one but i always thought they were pretty cool, but they only do 14" , 17" and 18" Meh, Alienware is the Macbook of Microsoft products
savi01 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Alienware is mostly for mobile gaming, but they are HEAVY, LOUD, and completely overpriced. I just saw a couple deals on the dv6tqe series, they have the i5 and i7. However, the screen resolution for a 15.6 in screen is 1366x768.. not really a big deal if you don't really care about such, but if you can wait a bit, I'm sure for the same price you can come across a similar spec laptop w/ a higher screen resolution (better for watching movies and such). However, if you like it, and the weight (6+ lbs w/ the 9 cell) isn't an issue for you, it is a decent laptop and will handle all your typical tasks plus more with ease.
Jasssc Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Wait. Apple is bringing out the new MacBooks soon. They are rumored to be a redesign which will be amazing. Im a HUGE apple fan. I'm typing this on my iPad while my MacBook is sitting on my desk with my schoolwork open and I'm answering a text on my iPhone all at this moment. I'm not going to start a big thing, but apple is worth the money. Simple and user friendly, yet powerful and brilliant.

I was looking at the upgraded version of it and it has a 1920x1080 resolution.

crowvet Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Just bought my wife a Lenovo Z570 think pad....... LOVE it.... way better than my acer. Around $600.00... Check it out. It has pretty good feedback and reviews
savi01 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 The upgraded version w/ the higher resolution would be a good choice. If you have the money for the Macbook's, and really like them go for it. Again it's all personal choice, either way I'm sure you'll find a great laptop. Good luck
