First DSLR

Like the title says, I'm looking to get my first DSLR camera. My point and shoot Canon has served it's purpose, but it's been dropped once too often and now it's time to move on. I'm partial to Canon, I used to have an A1 that I sold some time ago and I loved that camera. My brother still has his F1, I'm jealous!

So, DSLR owners please chime in with your suggestions and also let me know of your camera's drawbacks, if any. I'm open for suggestions and will listen to all opinions. My avatar tells you why I'm looking to upgrade.

Thank you in advance Adam's family members.

Canon T3i. Cost effective, comes with a decent lens, and capable of HD video. Easy to use, full of features that allow you to be creative once you're familiar with the system. If you only want photos without video look into used 1000d. I have some photos in the lounge using one. Had it about 4 years and still shooting great!

If you think you will get serious with trying to capture everything and prefer a great picture to tell a story instead of a picture to remember an event, look into Nikon. (unless you want video, then canon only) Lenses are much cheaper and camera bodies are comparable.

I would say T3i as well. If you like something more compact then look at the Sony NEX 5N. It has a APS-C size sensor a little bigger than the T3i. Rumor has it is the same as the NIKON D7000 sensor. Amazing quality pictures and low light performance. Lens are more expensive compared to the Canon.

Here in Canada we recently had a Canon T3i with 18-55mm kit lens deal at Futureshop for $749 plus save $100 by trading in an old camera working or not which made it $649 +tax.

We have a Canon EOS 7D and really like it.

When selecting a camera, the following are the criteria I use:

1) User interface - it is easy and logical to me? If it is too difficult to use or if features that I want are too difficult to utilize then it will never be used.

2) Lens - Is there a particular lens that you want to use? Or a specialty lens? All the major brands have a wide selection of general use lenses available but if you are wanting a specific specialty lens those might be available for a particular brand/model line.

3) Local service/support - What type of support do I need? If I want classes/education is that available for this brand? Some areas tend to be more favored toward particular brands.

I would have to agree with what two others said, T3i for sure. I have the lower model, the Canon Rebel Xsi, I'd have to double check, and I totally wish I would have forked over $100 more and got the T3i package at Best Buy. I've actually contemplated lately selling mine and upgrading. It's super user friendly, they have great support.

I would go with a Canon 7D as well, I love it. I also have the 5D, 5D mk2 & 5D mk3 as well. But for a hobbyist just looking to snap some great pics I would go with the 7D or 5D mk2. Good luck

Waiting for Dylan's thoughts here.

I'm not gonna lie...a little Jelly of you! I would love a big fancy Acronymical Camera...just don't understand them enough (yet) to justify the purchase! Good luck!

What kind of money are you wanting to spend?

I'm personally I Nikon guy from way back, but Canon's are great too.

The new D3100 or D3200 are great entry level DSLR camera's and as long as you're just using them for shots of the kids and such, will be AWESOME!

I have the 3100 and love it. The 3200 is new, and I would have bough IT if it was around when I pulled the trigger.

Agreed 100%.

Gotta have a body to attach your fancy glass to though....

Plus if you're getting into amazing glass, then you want to have a body to take advantage of it IMO. You find many people using a 500 dollar DSLR with a 5000 dollar lens... ;)

I used to have the A-1 too! Still kicking myself for ever getting rid of it. I LOVED that camera!! I had a 58mm F=1.2 Canon EF lens on it that was awesome in ANY light conditions!

I traded it in at the time (I'm talking like 15 years ago) for an EOS 50D with Eye control. What I loved most about this camera was the wide angle zoom lens it came with, 24-85mm. 24mm on an 35mm SLR is an amazing wide angle, compared to digital cameras with small sensor where it's the equivalent of maybe a 35mm. I've barely used this camera in many years now, just due to the hassle of developing film.

I have several compact point-and-shoot cameras I use now, but I'd like to get a DSLR sometime. I would also pick the Rebel T3i, since it will use the Canon lenses I have already, as well as my Speedlite flash.

One thing I've learned now is that I WILL NOT trade in my EOS 50e. I'm convinced that 10 or 20 years from now, what's really cool is having a 35mm camera like that..!

Buy the same brand as your three closest friends, that way you can borrow lenses :2thumbs:

By closest I mean logistically :)

That sounds very practical, but I have a rule not to let anyone borrow (1) my wife, (2) my car, and (3) my camera equipment! :jester:

I tried to get my bro to do that, and the jack in the box went and bought a dang Canon... We could have traded lenses and such. Boo!

I'm canon biased , my whole family shoots with canons. My uncle is an professional photographer and he turned me on to photography itself, so of course I went with canon.

I personally have a canon 60D. I decided against the t3i and t2i just because I wanted the next level up. It goes t3i -> 60D -> 7D. So I got the midrange.

It has great video potential which is another reason I leaned towards it.

I'm a big Nikon fan, I have the d80 and recently bought another lens for it. The pictures are always crystal clear and for what it is, it's easy to use. Go to a store and mess with them both, and I like the suggestion of seeing what your friends own. My bro in law is all nikon and he's a pro photographer, so lens swapping is great for me.

I like Nikon. I have a D90 and D5100. I mostly use the D5100 because it's a little smaller and has more features but they are both great cameras.
