Z71_Denali Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Summer is almost here... time for backyard get togethers and BBQs! This year i get to buy my first free standing grill, since we bought a house! in my research i had a few requirements for what i wanted High quality Stainless Steel Great Warranty Runs on Propane and of course, Made in the USA! well i think i found my grill! and its made by Holland Grills. Grills from The Holland Company they have a full line of gas grills, and just recently introduced a charcoal grill. their cast iron burners and cooking grid is warrantied FOR LIFE! and they guarantee NO FLARE UPS for the term of the parts warranty. each model has a different term, but the Stainless Steel Apex model is warrantied for 15 years! for more info about their company: http://www.hollandgrill.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.showpage/pageID/20/index.htm i'm going to order the Apex grill, stainless steel SearMate, half grill, and a cover once my house is done.
Chewy Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Nice! Make sure it's quality though. All of Webers grills sans two of there cheaper grills are made in the USA. I have a Weber Genesis that I wouldn't trade for anything. The way I tell is #1 the cooking surface. Mines cast iron, and #2 the lid. When you lift it, does it make you feel weak? lol I like a nice solid lid. If you have young children, the knob placement could be an issue too. The stainless can be a royal PITB to keep looking good on grills so keep that in mind. Chris
Z71_Denali Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 i wasn't aware Weber was made in USA! i was also considering their Summit S-470 but wasn't sure where its made. bits an pieces of each companies' warranty are better than the other. i like how the Weber has stainless steel burners and not cast iron, but on the other hand i like how the Holland is more of a convection style grill. i want one with a sear station. how do you think the Webers handle flare ups? thats one of the big things i like about the Holland. shut the lid and forget about it until its time to turn or take off the grill! the Weber is more expensive by itself, but with the SearMate on the Holland Apex makes them about the same price

My Genesis has triangle caps over the burners to keep flare ups down and keep the heat more constant. I've never had one, but I personally think it all depends on circumstances. I assembled my grill, and it's pretty well made. Better be for what they get for them.
Bigredmariner Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I have a Holland stainless grille, it's a small one. Perfect for tailgating or camping trips, not large enough for back patio grilling though. It is well built and I would imagine if their small ones are good the larger ones would be just as well built. Looks real similar in shape to the one you posted, but it stands on little legs instead of the base. Has a handle at the top for toting around too.

Bigredmariner Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Yeah, Companion. I couldn't think of the name but that's it.
Z71_Denali Posted May 11, 2012 Author Posted May 11, 2012 now that i compare them, i think the Weber Genesis S-330 may be more cost effective than a Summit. i don't really need the IR rotisserie burner, backlit knobs, and LED tank scale like the Summit has. the side burner is a nice addition the Holland doesn't have, although not sure how often i would actually use it. my pops has a grill with the side burner and he has never even used that function. but i feel like i can grill much more with a Holland, because its very effective at smoking meat and grilling low and slow. you can also cook a 20 lb turkey in the Holland which would be awesome for thanksgiving. only set back i see with it is it has one temp setting at around 400 so meat takes longer to cook, and to slow cook meat, you fill the drain pan with water to get about 300 degrees. the Webers have more cooking surface, but i'm not sure i need the extra space... the most we'll be cooking for is 4-6 people. it just seems like a more versatile grill when you add the SearMate to the side. OHHH THE DECISIONS!!!
Chewy Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 I'm VERY happy with my Weber... Remember, a tool that does multiple things doesn't necessarily do any one of them well or exceptionally. Our neighbor up the street bought a Weber smoker and MAN does it work well. He also has a Weber grill. Chris
XQIZT Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Not to throw another wrench in the works, but I LOVE my TEC grill. They're out of South Carolina, I think. AMAZING quality. Mine has been outside uncovered in Florida for like 10 years...no rust and it still works like the day it was bought, like 15 years ago.
Z71_Denali Posted May 11, 2012 Author Posted May 11, 2012 those are some nice grills as well! but way out of my price range, as are Fire Magic grills!

Our neighbor up the street bought a Weber smoker and MAN does it work well. He also has a Weber grill. Chris I too have a Weber Genesis. This past weekend I replaced the 3 burner tubes. I love how parts are readily available and are not too expensive. The modular design is nice and makes it so easy to fix. That grill is 14 years old as works as if it were new. As far as one tool to do multiple things...I wanted to get a smoker and had considered the Weber Smokey Mountain rig. Instead I got a 22.5 inch Weber kettle grill and a smoker insert from Smokenator 1000. I wound up with a great Groupon to a local joint so I saved about $100 and now have a great smoker as well as an extra grill for when my wife invites too many people over!
Z71_Denali Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 well i finally got my first grill!!! i ended up pulling the trigger on the Weber Genesis S-330 instead. yeah the Holland is a nice grill, but the local place that sold them wanted too much for the stainless model with the SearMate side table. and i like how the Weber has the searing station inside the grill with a built in side burner for other things. there's also a mechanical tank level indicator which is nice to have; we'll see how well it works. the Summit series was along the same price as the Holland, but the backlight knobs, LED tank scale, built in smoker and rotisserie are just more components that could break! they sell a rotisserie kit specific to the Genesis for $80 if i wanted it and smoker boxes are readily available. here's some pics of it! i can't thank my wife enough for this awesome b-day gift!
mikegeaney Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 +1 on the nice. Enjoy. I'd be interested to hear how that searing burner work out.
Z71_Denali Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 +1 on the nice. Enjoy. I'd be interested to hear how that searing burner work out. i'll be testing that out this evening
694doorbird Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 +1 on the nice. Enjoy. I'd be interested to hear how that searing burner work out. i'll be testing that out this evening Well, How did the searing burner work??
Z71_Denali Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Well, How did the searing burner work?? PERFECT! no flare up, carmelization was done after about 2 minutes on each side, then a few more minutes over high indirect heat and i had a great medium rare steak i was pleasantly surprised how well it turned out. i'm used to pan searing them then throwing it in the oven on broil, but it turned out even better on the grill!
Z71_Denali Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 Good deal!!!! yup! and we have family coming into town for labor day, i'll be grilling some BBQ chicken, smoke some salmon (try out the smoker box i got for the grill), and maybe some burgers and dogs
694doorbird Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I think you may be my long lost dad :jester:
Z71_Denali Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 LOL, well i might be a little too young for that... i just turned 25
