Grit Guards

I ordered a few Adams grit guards and had bought a couple 5 gallon buckets from the hardware store. When I placed them in the buckets they did not go all the way to the bottom. Is this how they are made or did I get some funky 5 gallon buckets?

I think you got some slightly funky buckets. They all vary in size a little.

Yep... should slide all the way down, or at least almost all the way to the bottom to be most effective. Buckets will vary in OD from place to place... not all 5 gallons will have the same dimensions.

My buckets and grit guards from adams don't go all the way down, but pretty close.

Had a new Home Depot orange bucket that was too narrow around the base for my guards. I suspect the Lowe's bucket to be the same. My old dirty white bucket works just fine.

Some people have put zip ties around the edges to give it that little more diameter in order to help them not spin.

Mine fit my 5 gallon buckets close to the bottom but not all the way. I wouldn't want them all the way down anyway.

Mine go down about 3/4 b but that is it...I thought all 5 gallon buckets were the same diameters. Well they either are extremely far away from the dirt on the bottom... or I find a new bucket...lol

Just bought a grit guard and it fits perfectly in my Home Depot orange bucket. PrinceVallium, perhaps a bit of manufacturing variation in your bucket? My guess is that big box and other hardware stores get buckets from a number of different suppliers and they're not all the same dimensions.

Well I will have to take the grit guard to Home Depot and see how it fits in their buckets then. The buckets at Lowe's were kind of cheesy anyway.... but they did have a nice foam grip for the bucket handle!

Mine is about 3/4 down with bucket from Walmart, will take the grit guard to HomeDepot for test fit today.

They fit the Lowes bucket tight tight no spin but they fit!

You're actually better off if they don't go all the way down. This means at some point it got too narrow and now has a snug fit to the sides. If it went all the way to the bottom it means it isn't tight anywhere and thus could be spinning.

In using them with the grit guard today it doesn't seem all that bad. I used the Adams soap for the first time and failed to get enough suds....maybe I did not add the right amount. I do know that the grit guards definately are not spinning in the bucket since they are not all the way down so that is good.

 

The directions say use about two ounces in the wash MIT and fill 2/3 of the way up spaying into the mit. Do you do that with the it guard in place? What is an easy way to measure the two ounces?

I just squeeze 2 oz. of Car Wash into a small measuring cup and put that in 2 gal of water.
