Tiny holes in the paint

InDepthAutoDetailing

Question

Sorry no pics.

Now that I got that out of the way.

On my truck (09 Ram) and the 2011 Challenger I did yesterday after using SHR there appears to be tiny pin holes in the paint. They are only on the hood. I haven't found them on any other body panel. I'm sure they were there before SHR but they were masked by the swirls. You can't feel them. Not even with the baggie test. So they are not on the paint but in the paint.

I haven't noticed this on any other vehicle I've detailed.

Any idea what causes this? Am I destined for a repaint?

No clue here Len. I've had that also, but they only time you could see them was at the right angle in front of my 500W halogens so I didn't want to get too far into the weeds in finding out what it was. I know it wasn't anything I did...or you did. Probably someting with the environmental contaminents or less than stellar clear coat job? IDK, but the ones I've seen have always been on the hood, roof or trunk lid.

This is pretty common. I see it on all three of my vehicles which have been driven extensively on the highway. Sand/dirt blasts your windshield and pits it, your paint is MUCH softer so it pits it quicker/easier. It's either that, or you have clear pop which is when the solvents in fresh paint try to escape too quickly it causes little craters or holes in the paint. This doesn't usually happen with factory paint though.

Sounds like a similar issues to what I was encountering here. http://www.adamsforums.com/forums/general-detailing-discussion-questions/17308.htm

Its a paint/clearcoat defect/issue that is appearing because you are cleaning up the surface. Sandblasting and heat are 2 reasons it happens. If polish gets stuck in them, use the APC on a black pad trick.

I wonder if it came from the factory like that. Would be curious to see if wet sanding fixed it, does it look like it goes straight to bare metal?

They don't go all the way to the metal. It almost looks like tree sap but it's not.

I'll check next time I wash her up. There is an area on the hood I wet sanded to get some scratches out. Thanks

Mike, I've had that happen before where it is what I would call crows feet. Little cracks in the clear that get caked with polish. So far I haven't had any polish in these tiny holes. I'll try to get a pic and post up.

Thanks for the tip about the APC and the black pad.
