Vink70 Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Recently started looking for an entry level, weekend shooter rifle and this was suggested to me. 100% American made Rifle The Ruger American Rifle™ Anyone have one? shot one? looking to buy one? Obviously I like the 100% American made. Can be found for under $500 easily. I have been reading reviews on it like crazy and most of the places I look they are sold out of them or do not even sell Ruger. I have narrowed it down quite a bit to something along these lines and in a .308 caliber. If anyone has any other suggestions for wild boar, coyote, fox, or other game that can be hunted with it feel free to chime in your suggestions. Other rifles I was looking at was the Savage Axis XP, Savage Hog, or something like a Marlin X7 but so far the Ruger is going above the Savage
Vink70 Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 It arrived yesterday and we assembled it and I love it. Come to find out, the Leupold Scope is 100% American made as well. BONUS POINTS! 100% American made. Very well constructed Went on a bullet spending spree tonight to get a few different weights and brands to see which the gun likes best. Huge fan of it overall and cant wait to shoot it/
Chris@Adams Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Nice, Ruger makes a nice gun, my son Adam and I both have Rugers.
Vink70 Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 Nice. So you got a .308? Actually no, I stepped down to a .243. After talking to a LOT of people and their experience, it was too big for what I would be doing. Ammo would be a shy hair more expensive but that didnt bother me. The .243 will be perfect for targets, fox, coyote. If I go out of state I can rifle hunt a deer with it. They have been known to take down bears and boars with a shot placed in the right spot. pretty universal rifle for a first one for me.
Kenneth Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 That's what I was going to recommend a .243 will do whatever you need. I don't know if you have kids but its a caliber that they can shoot as well. Is that a 3X9 scope?

My guy HOOKED me up big time. Makes me want to keep buying stuff from him.
Kenneth Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Lol well it's addicting like most things you do. Although if I was going to buy I would be getting an AR or AK and spend a ton on high cap mags. Those are going to be the first things to get restricted along with high cap pistol mags. I have a feelin that its coming down the pipeline.
Team Adam's Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Sorry I missed your post...but you made a solid decision. For the applications you're looking at, the .243 is a solid choice. I'll be expecting a range report soon.
Vink70 Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 Hope to get there before new years since we are making a trip to WI to hang out with friends, shoot stuff and blow stuff up. Hope to have it sighted in by then.
whiterp199 Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Let me know how you like it as you get some more rounds through it. I am thinking of picking one up for a coyote gun. I will say I have a savage 116 in stainless and 7mm mag. I love it, but sometimes wish I had a 243 to go a little easier on the shoulder.
Vink70 Posted December 11, 2012 Author Posted December 11, 2012 Still waiting to put the first one through it. I need to sight it in but im working 8 days straight and it makes it kind of tough to do. Want to try to do it as soon as possible. Really looking forward to it.
Kenneth Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Have you ever sighted in a rifle before? If you can get it bore sighted for cheap I would recommend doing that. That would at least get you on paper lol. Also I would research at what distance you should sight a .243 in at. I sighted my AR in at 33 yards that puts me inch high at 100 and dead on at 250 I believe. Just some quick reading says to sight in at 2 inches high at 100. That will put you dead on at 200 and about 6 inches low at 300.

He said he would do it and help me do it. he knows more about guns than I could ever forget. I believe he knows all those things. Id trust him to anyway.
Kenneth Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Sighting in a rifle is easy. Just see how much a "click" is on your scope and go on from there. Also I shoot 3 shots and then adjust the scope towards the bullet wholes then shoot 3 more. I always shoot 3 shots and then adjust to try and get in the center of that pattern.

Dont laugh but I think they are 1/4" per click of whatever they are but me adjusting them what ever direction they need to go is over my head. Trust me when I say this is my first rifle and im not all knowledged up on this stuff yet. I do however appreciate the help.
Kenneth Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 I wouldn't laugh much haha. Adjusting a scope can get you twisted up sometimes with direction. I have twisted the wrong direction plenty of times and thought WTF lol. I would see what bullet weight your going to shoot and once you sight it in with that weight stick with it. Also get you a good case. Something hard and not a soft case. That way once you sight it in once your basically done and only have to shoot it once or twice to make sure you didn't bump it off somehow.
Vink70 Posted December 11, 2012 Author Posted December 11, 2012 was looking at a case like this... I know its cheap but i dont forsee myself spending $100 on a case unless I HAVE to. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Pillared-Single-Scoped-Case/dp/B000P3WQ86/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355192767&sr=8-1&keywords=rifle+hard+case]Amazon.com: Plano Pillared Single Scoped Gun Case: Sports & Outdoors[/ame] I have 2 boxes of 100gr and 1 box of 95gr hornady superperformance... im liking how they look so far but we will see how that works.

That case will be fine. Also the superperformance ammo is awesome. I love it.
Vink70 Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 Case works out just right for the rifle. Got to sight it in today. First shot after just bolting the scope on and firing, was 1" up and left of center. 2nd shot was dead on, every shot following was dead on. Hit a shotgun shell from 100 yards out first try. Extremely accurate optics and rifle. Little to no kick. Didnt leave any feelings as my shoulder as I type this. Extremely satisfied with my purchase.
Team Adam's Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Victory! Always a good feeling to get zeroed that quickly.
Kenneth Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Nice! I went and put down $1400 for another AR but I'm afraid that I won't get it. It seems that everyone is not ordering or not selling ARs. I hate that we have to fear politics.
Vink70 Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 If you need one, MIGHT be able to get you the RRA Operator. not sure which operator.... it was under $1000 last time I was at his shop.
Schwag one Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Nice choice, did it come with the bipod? I have a Savage .308 and it shoots awesome, the accutrigger is the best. My brother in law owns a gun store so I got a pretty good deal. Have you out any rounds through it yet? Most rifles that come with a sight/scope already mounted already come bore sighted from the factory.

I hate that we have to fear politics. BudsGunShop.com's retail store is in Lexington where I live and they are literally backing 18 wheelers up to the store and unloading AR's to sell to people standing in line around the building...It's crazy lol They arent price gouging them either... Btw, the Ruger American is a nice rifle. Its on my "list" of things to buy soon.
