chas
Hey Guys, Searched around, but couldn't find anything on this, if I missed a relevant thread please feel free to let me know. I just purchased my 2012 Tacoma and wanted to tap into your guys' knowledge on keeping frames in good condition. I live in Northern Virgina and while the winters aren't bad, salt gets thrown around like candy on Halloween at the slightest notion of winter weather. Tacomas are notorious for frame rot, even on the second generations like mine after a couple years. Do any of you guys treat your frame? If so, with what? I want to get a jump start on keep it rust/surface rust free for as long as I can although I know it can be inevitable. Thanks for the input in advance. DonJuan692006
I know there are a lot of car dealers around here that offer undercarriage protection, but I couldn't tell you what products they use. The stuff is pricey but most of them warrant whatever the coating is for a certain amount of years (the last one I was offered was six).
JHL88
I think pickups in general are more prone to rust. For protection im not sure, I thought I heard somehwere that someone used to cover the undercarriage with motor oil like 2-3x a year. Seems to me that its a better option than not doing anything at all. NOVA gets rediculous with salt sometimes. One of the things I don't miss. Its not much better in Kansas but South Carolina on the other hand... I don't even think they have salt trucks.
LFairbanks
Somebody referenced this stuff and it looks to be pretty good. Thinking this is the route I'am going to go when it comes time. However I think you have to re-apply. How often I don't recall, I want to say every year, but if it works it is worth it IMO. Crowvet has used the stuff before and if I remember correctly said that it was good stuff. However the application he used was to break loose seized and rusted bolts. http://www.fluid-film.com/applications/automotive/
suke
When I had a jeep I undercoated the whole underside with POR15. I took apart the axles and did the same, then covered it all with POR15 chassis coat. Assembled it all and called it a day. 10 years, 153k miles later and many offroading trips it looked still brand new under there.

Chuckster
I used Amsoil Heavy Duty metal protector on my 91 Dodge CTD pick up and had no rusting at all in 20 years on the frame and I live in NJ. I sprayed all the nooks inside the rails and around the bolt hole areas with a long small hose....... This is a "wax like" coating that does not attract dust. POR 15 is some good stuff but as usual there are better products on the market....... Google: Master Series Coatings for more info. Another company is Eastwood Company for rust protection kits........ They have rust prevention kits and they are great to deal with. Keep in mind you have to choose rust PREVENTION for a new vehicle........ There is rust protection, removal, covering so choose the proper items.
