Cleaning "chrome" emblems?

Hey guys, i could not find a topic on this easily so here we go.

 

How do I tell if someone is chrome, and what do I use? 

 

For example, this car: 

 

Has a chrome looking badge and front trim. Is it chrome? how do I tell? how do I clean it/get rid of scratches? 

 

I am assuming I can use metal polish #1/2...but, I am making sure it is proper first

Most of that is probably chrome coating, so any of the paint polishes should work fine.  Some polishing with the Finishing polish and a white pad is where I would start with the scratches.

if it is only a chrome coating, is there any risk of polishing it too much?

Not really, I guess, but you could go through it if you went with an aggressive product/pad.

Most are just plastic with a thin chrome finish. APC on a towel will clean it up nicely, but scratches I would just live with because the coating is going to be so thin.

I agree with SYMAWD.  With the new techniques these days, lots of stuff that used to be chromed metal are now chrome plated plastic and more fragile. Clean it, try a little Revive polish or Swirl and Haze Remover on the scratches, and then top it off with a good coat of wax to protect it from further scratches.
